Southwest Airlines was incorporated in 1967. The founders of the airline believed that “If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline." This belief still holds true to Southwest Airlines today. Why fly with Southwest Airlines


Passengers flying with Southwest Airlines can choose to check-in either at the airport, or online. You may check-in as early as 24 hours up to an hour before your scheduled flight. Checking in early has its perks with Southwest Airlines. This is when you will be assigned your boarding position. So the later you check-in, the further back in the queue you will be when boarding your flight. The early bird gets on first!

Baggage Allowances

Southwest Airlines offers all passengers the allowance of two pieces of check-in baggage, each weighing no more than 50 pounds (22kg), and no bigger than 62 inches (length + width + height). Excess baggage will begin at the cost USD75 per piece thereafter.


Southwest Airlines has an open seating policy. The earlier you board, the better your chances of getting a seat of your choice. This is one of the perks of checking-in and boarding early. Passengers on flights operated by AirTran Airways, advance seat assignments can be purchased at a cost between USD10-USD30 (NZD11.50 – NZD35).

Booking Fees/Payment Methods

Booking online or via phone is free with Southwest Airlines. However a government imposed security fee of USD2.50 – USD10 (NZD2.90 – NZD11.50) is applicable. Certain airports also charge a Passenger Facility Charge that is between USD2 – USD5 (NZD2.30 – NZD5.80).

In-flight Services

Southwest Airlines subscribes to the “do unto others what you would have others do unto you” principle. Treating passengers the way they wish to be treated is a cornerstone golden rule at Southwest. You can expect excellent service from their committed and dedicated crewmembers. Peanuts, pretzels and a selection of non-alcoholic drinks are available to passengers free of charge. Premium beverages, liquor, beer and wine cost between USD3 – USD5 (NZD3.50 – NZD5.80). Wi-Fi Internet connection on-board costs USD8 (NZD9.20) per device, per day. The Spirit Magazine, Southwest Airline’s publication is available free of charge on-board. Articles encompassing a wide range of topics such as pop culture, health, sports, and business will keep you occupied and entertained on your flight. With your own devices, you will be able to log onto their wireless Internet connection (if available) and gain access to 18 live channels and up to 75 on-demand episodes of popular series via their inflight portal homepage’s Entertainment Tab.
