Flying with Tigerair Australia

Launched in 2007, Tigerair Australia is one of Australia's leading low-cost airlines. Tigerair is owned by Virgin Australia, partly in response to Qantas' low-cost subsidiary Jetstar.

Tigerair is based out of Melbourne, but also uses Brisbane and Sydney as focus cities.

Ways to Check In

Online check-in is available 72 hours before departure up until 1 hour before take-off. Boarding passes can be printed off or saved on mobile devices.

Web check-in is not available for travellers with special assistance requirements or those travelling with toddlers.

Airport check-in is also available, but this closes 45 minutes before take-off. Tigerair recommends arriving at the airport 90 minutes before your flight if you're checking-in in person.

Baggage Allowance & Fees

Some Tigerair fare types do not include any checked-in baggage, but this can be bought as an extra. Baggage can be paid for when booking your ticket, through the website's 'manage my booking' feature or at the airport. It is much cheaper to do this at the time you buy your ticket. Different weight allowances are available for purchase, allowing you to customise your trip.

Buying a 15kg bag at the airport costs AU$75 for a short flight (maximum 1 hour 45 minutes) or AU$90 for longer flights.

Passengers are allowed 1 main cabin bag as well as a personal item. The main bag must not weigh more than 7kg or exceed 54cm x 38cm x 23cm. You can also purchase an upgrade to 12kg per item.

Seating can be selected at the time of booking for a fee, or you can allow Tigerair to select seats for you at no cost. The airline tries to keep groups together, but cannot guarantee this.

The price for seat selection ranges from AU$4 to AU$25, depending on the seat type. There are 3 seating options: standard, extra leg room and upfront. Emergency row seats are available to passengers who meet certain health regulations.
