Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is the official name of the international airport in Athens; named in honour of a prominent and influential Greek politician. The ultra-modern airport has an exhibition hall dedicated to ex-Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos – a true testament to the nation’s adoration for the aspiring diplomat who held a significant role in Greece’s aviation history, to say the least.
The modern airport has two terminals – Main Terminal and Satellite Terminal. The two terminal buildings are connected by an underground pedestrian tunnel, fitted with travellators. Main Terminal serves mostly domestic, inter-Schengen and non-Schengen flights, whereas Satellite Terminal serves non-Schengen flights only. The three-level Main Terminal has the arrival hall on one level, the departure on another, and a level lined with food and beverage stalls. Satellite Terminal has two levels – arrival and departure.
Services and Facilities
For passengers travelling with bubs, there are baby rooms throughout the airport for your convenience. The airport’s family-friendly facilities also includes a kid’s play area on the second floor of the main terminal. At the same terminal, the bigger children can also enjoy art and culture exhibitions on the Departure level. The airport understands that travelling with kids could be a handful so there are porter services available for when you need that extra hand.
From book shops to music stores, there’s something for everyone.
Wi-Fi connection is available anywhere in the airport, but only for 60 minutes. You can then move to one of the twenty-two internet kiosks for complimentary 15 minutes usage. Need internet access for longer? Then it’s worth looking into buying a lounge pass. You’ll not only get Wi-Fi, but also snacks and refreshments, and a comfortable sofa to plop into. Some lounge operators offer more facilities and services than others, such as shower area, so do look for the better deal.
Tired travellers will be grateful to know there’s a hotel within walking distance of the airport’s vicinity. All you have to do is drag your bags (in your hands and under your eyes!) to Sofitel Airport Hotel, which is right opposite Main Terminal.
