Christchurch International Airport

The main airport that takes flights to and from Christchurch, New Zealand is Christchurch International Airport. Formerly called Harewood Airport, Christchurch International Airport is located 12km northwest of the city centre, in the suburb of Harewood.

Christchurch International Airport is New Zealand’s first international airport. It is dubbed as the second busiest airport in the country after Auckland Airport in terms of annual passengers and aircraft movements. Besides Auckland Airport, Christchurch International Airport is also one of the only two airports in New Zealand that can handle Boeing 777 and Boeing 747 aircraft regular service. The airport currently offers direct flights to 18 domestic destinations and to 11 international destinations, including 100 direct flights to the Antarctic annually.

Christchurch International Airport has a single terminal, servicing both domestic and international flights. The main terminal building is located at the intersection of two sealed runways. The Check-in Hall inside the main terminal building is combined for both domestic and international flights; same for the Baggage Claim Hall.

The airport has a total of 33 gates. The regional wing of the airport handles all Air New Zealand Link turboprop flights, and is located in the southwest of the terminal building (gates 3-14). Gates 15-22 is for the central zone, which handles mainline domestic flights via Air New Zealand and Jetstar. In the northeast section of the terminal are gates 24-35 – the international wing.

Services and Facilities

Christchurch International Airport features the necessary services and facilities that bring comfort and convenience to passengers going through the airport. Those who wish to leave their bicycle at the airport may do so by surrendering the bicycle to the Luggage Solutions area, which offers secure storage for packed bicycles. Luggage Solutions also offer luggage storage, baggage wrapping, and freight excess baggage. The airport also has banks and currencies that are located on the ground floor of the Check-in Hall. ATM’s including ASB, ANZ, BNZ, and Travelex are located throughout the terminal.

Public telephones are located all throughout the terminal, while mobile phones and SIM cards are available for rent from the Vodafone Rentals Kiosk in the International Arrivals Hall. Fax service is also available at iSITE, also located in the International Arrivals Hall. On Level One of the terminal there is a NZ Post box, as well as stamps and postal services.

If you need to take a shower, the male and female washrooms in the International Arrivals Hall have public shower facilities. You can use them for free. iSITE offers towel rentals complete with complimentary soap. Christchurch International Airport also has baby changing rooms and nursing facilities.

For leisure activities, Christchurch International Airport provides unlimited free Wi-Fi, as well as Internet kiosks located in the Check-in Hall, Departures, and Arrivals Hall in the terminal. Duty-free shopping is also available at the airport, along with more than 35 shopping stores and places to grab a snack, dine, or have coffee. Entertainment centres are also located within the airport.

From the city centre, take Hereford St., Montreal St., and Park Terrace to Harper Avenue. Drive along Memorial Avenue and then take the second exit onto Durey Rd at the roundabout.

There are three different bus routes that service Christchurch International Airport. Two routes serve the main terminal: route 3 going into the city centre via Avonhead and Riccarton, and Route 29 going into the city centre via Fendalton. The Comet bus, which takes the Papanui and Hornby routes, can be taken by walking to Orchard Road
