Nelson Airport, known in Maori as Te Papa Waka Rererangi o Whakatū, is one of the six most visited airports in New Zealand and the fourth busiest on the South Island. The airport is located 8km to the south-east of Nelson and all its facilities are contained within one terminal.
Basic facilities are available inside the airport, including an hour of complimentary Wi-Fi, a television area and an ATM. Inside the departure lounge is The Airport Cafe, where travellers can buy coffee, alcoholic drinks and food.
Before your flight, or for those seeing off friends, a marked perimeter trail allows members of the public to walk around the outside of the airport and runways. This circuit starts at the recreational car park and is 5.75km long. Along the route are exercise stations for fitness enthusiasts.
Due to concerns over the terminal's ability to withstand an earthquake, a new $32m terminal, twice the size of the current one, has been given the go-ahead to be built. Plans were announced in August 2016 with the hope that the project would be completed within two years.
