Palmerston North Airport is located on the outskirts of the suburb of Milson in Palmerston North, New Zealand, 5 km north-east of the city’s central area. Although it is called an international airport, it has stopped international services since 2008, and currently its only international flights will be those aircrafts who are waiting for clearance to continue to Wellington. Interesting to know, was that on 17 May 1998, ten people towed a fully fuelled [now defunct] Freedom Air Boeing 737-300 over 100 metres in 47 seconds, to celebrate the opening of the new runway extensions and the record was logged in the Guinness World Records! Other than commercial airlines, planes from training schools and fire rescue services also share the area.
There is only one terminal for Palmerston North Airport. It is a two-storey building consisting of a cafeteria and bar, a bookstore, a Union Airways Gallery exhibition of early commercial flight in New Zealand and also an Air New Zealand Koru Lounge. Although the facilities may seem little compared to other airports, Palmerston North Airport provides great services which will make you feel at home throughout your transit at the airport. The airport provides free Wi-Fi and various internet kiosks making one ever-so-connected to the rest of the world - you could even sneak some work done before leaving the airport into the adventure land of New Zealand!
Arriving at least 30 minutes before a domestic flight is preferred to check your baggage in, otherwise just be at the boarding gate a mere 20 minutes before your flight with your boarding pass if you have no luggage to check in. All boarding calls are announced over the speaker system so you don’t have to worry about missing a flight, and gates are easily accessible due to the humble size of the airport. If you are arriving into Palmerston North, checked in baggage can be collected from the self-claim area at the eastern end of the Terminal.
There are various airport near the airport for those who have arrived late or wish to stay near the airport. The friendly ground staff will help you with any bookings and recommendations, as well as your itinerary queries.
