 Tamky Airport

Chu Lai International Airport is a public airport that serves Chu Lai, a sea port and urban and industrial area in Núi Thành District, Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. It is located in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, Núi Thành District, near Tam Kỳ city, the largest city in Quảng Nam Province. It is operated by Middle Airports Corporation. The airfield was originally established in the Vietnam War, as Chu Lai Air Base, by the United States Marines. After the fall of Saigon, the airport was nearly abandoned and then only used irregularly for military flights. The construction of the terminal began in 2004 and it received its first commercial flight (which originated from Ho Chi Minh) the following year, 2005. The airport became the largest airfield in Vietnam in terms of area, covering 30 square kilometres.

Services and Facilities

Chu Lai International Airport serves as a hub for VASCO and Vietnam Airlines. The airport has one concrete runway, directed 14/32, and measures 3,050 metres (10,000 feet) long. At present, there are three airlines that operate at the airport, all serving domestic flights. Vietjet Air (Ho Chi Minh flights commence on 27 May 2015), Vietnam Airlines (Hanoi), and Vietnam Airlines operated by VASCO (Ho Chi Minh). There are plans from the government of Vietnam for the improvement of the airport. It approved an investment plan that puts VND 11,470 billion (nearly $700 million) in investment for enlarging the airport’s capacity to 25 landing places by 2015 and 46 by 2025. The project will include renovation and new infrastructure, including two runways, 3,800 metres and 4,000 metres long, and 60 meters wide each, six parking lots, and two transit stations. Existing runways and parking lots will be upgraded, and the airport will also receive a new signal light system and control station for average-sized aircraft. By its projected completion in 2025, Vietnamese officials hope the airport will be able to handle four million passengers. Furthermore, the airport is projected to become an air cargo transport hub, with five million metric tonnes of cargo per year.
