Where to rent a car in Bali
Although not that popular in the area due to the presence of other cheaper, economical, and convenient transportation options and possibilities, there still are several car rental companies within central Bali, in the Denpasar region – where tourists and travellers usually flock. There are mainly settled in the districts of Kota, North Kota, and the rest of Denpasar, while the Bali Airport also provides a few. These car rental companies provide various services, including rental cars for personal drives, cars with drivers, GPS systems, and scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs, which can also be rolled into one package.
Some of the companies located in central Bali include local Darma Bali Car Rental, Best Bali Car Rental, Bali Car Rental, Rudy Car Rental, Topbalirentcar.com, VSE Bali Car Rental, and many others. International operators, meanwhile, include Toyota, Avis, Hertz, and others. Several of these companies offer classic vehicles, while others provide top-of-the-line luxury vehicles, limousines, and others upon request. Note that renting cars within Bali is not and will never be cheap – as it is considered luxury to have cars in the area. Moreover, travellers who are booking cars for them to drive should have international driver's permit, along with his or her personal national driver's license, before he or she is allowed to drive around. Carrying none of these papers will result to being reprimanded, fined, or being jailed by the local police – who are strict and uptight to point.
What to expect when renting a car from Bali
Bali is a relatively large island, and although it is beautiful – it is not a joy to drive in. Traffic congestion, especially in the Denpasar area, Ubud, Kuta, and Seminyak areas, along with poor road conditions and lack of proper manners when driving are primary reasons as to why driving here is not recommended. Apart from this, driving travellers should also be aware of the presence of motorcycle riders, which are aplenty here. These motorcycles weave through the main roads and the back roads, and they are like birds – they fly through the traffic. Always make sure to look at your rear and side views so that you won't hit any. Also, driving in Bali is on the left-hand side.
