Hong Kong International Airport
Most flights from Hong Kong International operate out of Terminal 1, with Terminal 2 being used by low-cost carriers. The airport is a hub for Cathay Pacific, which flies to more 50 destinations across five continents, including direct flights to Auckland.
The airport is built on an artificial island and can be reached from the centre of Hong Kong in 30 minutes with the Airport Express train (tickets from HK$60). Public buses are cheaper but take longer than the train, and taxis are a lot more expensive (around HK$400).
Popular destinations from Hong Kong International Airport
Most of Asia is within easy reach of Hong Kong International, but one of the closest and most popular destinations is Taipei. Like Hong Kong, Taiwan has a complicated relationship with China, and it's easier for New Zealand passport holders to visit than the mainland as no visa is required.
If you're eager to experience mainland China, Shanghai is just 2 hours and 30 minutes from Hong Kong. The city may lack the sights and heritage of Beijing, but the food is legendary and there's no better place to get caught up in the bustle of modern Chinese life.
If you keep putting off that trip to Europe, Hong Kong puts you nearly half-way there. London's world-renowned museums, theatres and restaurants are only one flight away, and once you're there, it's just a short hop to the rest of Europe by air, road or rail.
