Although New Plymouth boasts the airport closest to Australia in New Zealand, it currently only offers domestic flights to three cities.

The shortest journey is up to Auckland. New Zealand's largest city is just 45 minutes by plane, putting its famous harbour and multicultural restaurants within easy reach. Just outside the city are a number of the country's top vineyards.

Just under an hour away is the capital. As well as the obligatory tour of Parliament House, Wellington has a trove of attractions such as its fine galleries and museums, the old Nairn Street Cottage and the Botanic Garden, as well as its iconic cable car.

New Plymouth's final flight option is to Christchurch on the South Island. The city is centred around Cathedral Square, home to the famous religious icon, a large public chess board and a number of cafes, bars and restaurants. Buses from the square head to destinations all over the island, with routes to Dunedin, Napier and Queenstown being the most popular.
