The airport that serves Ko Samui is the Samui International Airport, which is also referred to as Ko Samui Airport or Koh Samui Airport. The airport is around two kilometres north of Chaweng, the main city and largest resort centre of the island of Koh Samui in the country of Thailand. The airport does not have an indoor area, except for a gift shop within the vicinity.

Koh Samui, as an amphoe or district within the Surat Thani Province, is further divided into seven sub-districts, namely Ang Thong, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Na Mueang, Maret, Bo Phut, and Mae Nam. The climate in Koh Samui has been recorded at an annual average high of 30.95 degrees Celsius or 87.73 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average low of 24.97 degrees Celsius or 76.95 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the domestic attractions within Koh Samui include the Big Buddha, Samui Butterfly Garden, or Natien Butterfly garden, Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo, and Hin Ta Hin Yai. Bangrak Beach, also referred to as the Big Buddha Beach, has been known throughout due to the 12 metre-high Buddha state that dominates the area. The beach, although with the Big Buddha as its main attraction, is generally calm and quiet. The Big Buddha beach also has souvenir stalls, along with food and drink stalls. Samui Butterfly Garden, or Natien Butterfly garden, lets its visitors walk around with numerous butterflies that flutter around in their natural environment. The Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo features a lot of underwater species that include sharks, and other types of fish, among others. The zoo also has panthers, in addition to the tigers and birds, to name a few. Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks features natural geological formations, also known as the Grandpa and Grandma rocks. Close to the rocks is a small white beach, not suitable for swimming, albeit has a great view that look out onto some of the nearer islands. Other destinations include Samui Waterfalls, and Samui Snake Farm.

Koh Samui International Airport does not operate long-haul flights. From Singapore’s Changi Airport though, flights to Paris via Charles de Gaulle Airport; London via London Heathrow Airport; and Helsinki via Helsinki Airport are operated by airlines such as Air France, British Airways, and Finnair, respectively. These flights can take more or less 10 to 12 hours, depending on the destination, the flight, and the airline of choice.

Samui International or Koh Samui Airport operates flights to domestic and international destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang, and Kunming with seasonal flights to Guangzhou, via airlines such as Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airlines, Firefly, Lucky Air, SilkAir, and Thai Airways International.
