Adelaide Airport is the main airport of Adelaide, South Australia, located adjacent to West Beach, at about 7km west of the city centre. Carrying over seven million passengers in 2013, it was held as the fifth busiest airport in Australia, and was also hailed as Australia's best capital city airport in 2006, 2009, and 2011. The airport is operated by the private company, Adelaide Airport Limited.
Being the capital city of South Australia, it's only natural for Adelaide to have things it can be proud of and attractions that keep tourists coming. From stylish architecture, to sandy beaches, art events and festivals, night life, fine dining, down to having some of Australia's best café strips, your trip to the city will become like no other. West Beach is an excellent swimming beach just 4km away from the airport, perfect for family walks and swimming. Glenelg is the historic beachside suburb that houses the Grand hotel and many restaurants and cafes while Montefiore Hill offers a spectacular view of the city, especially at night. There are also zoos and museums waiting for you to visit like the Adelaide Zoo, Migration Museum, Art Gallery of South Australia, South Australian Maritime Museum, and the Bicentennial Conservatory. Also, you shouldn't miss a visit at the city's national parks like the Belair National Park, the Morialta Conservation Park, and the Cleland Conservation Park where tourists are allowed to have up close and personal encounters with the animals endemic to Australia.
How to get around within Adelaide
The State Government of Adelaide has contracted out the public transport services in the city under a unified brand name, the Adelaide Metro, and uses a unified ticketing system, the Metroticket. Single journey tickets can be purchased from ticket machines on board trains or from conductors on the tram or from bus drivers. Now, onto the public transport system – the Adelaide Metro bus system covers the city, the Adelaide Hills in the east, down to Maclaren Vale in the south, and as far as Gawler in the north. Tram services run from the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Hindmarsh to the city centre. It also runs along North Terrace and King William Street all the way to the south west and terminating at the popular seaside suburb of Glenelg. Tram travel from South Terrace to the Northern Terminus of the line is free, as well as travel confined to Jetty Road in Glenelg. The Metro train system of Adelaide has four main lines – the Gawler Line that operates to the north of the city, the Outer Harbor Line that goes northwest of the city via Port Adelaide, the Noarlunga Line that runs to the far south of the city through the beachside suburb of Brighton, and the Belair Line that runs to the southeast of the city. Taxis can be hailed on the streets or arranged by phone. Walking is an easy way to explore the city as it is compact and most tourist attractions are centred on King William Street. For places outside of the city centre and onto the suburbs, renting a car would be most efficient. Car rental companies are represented at the airport.
How to get there
If you're flying in to the city, you will probably land at the Adelaide International Airport which lies around 7km to the west of the city centre. From the airport, there is public JetBus J1/J2 that services the airport. Skylink Adelaide also operates regularly to most destinations within the city centre from the airport. Taxis are available outside the terminal and rental car companies are accessible at the terminal kiosks. Entering the city by train, you will have to board The Ghan that runs to Alice Springs and Darwin, and The Overland that runs to Melbourne, while the Indian Pacific runs to Perth, Broken Hill, and Sydney. These tourist train services are operated by the Great Southern Railway. Aboard a bus, the Greyhound Australia will take you to Adelaide from Sydney, Melbourne, and Alice Springs.
