Nha Trang Airport – otherwise known as Cam Ranh Airport – is the main airport serving the coastal city of Nha Trang, a popular tourist destination in Vietnam famous for its beautiful beaches and clear waters. The airport is located in the town of Cam Ranh and is 30km away from Nha Trang itself. It handles flights to both domestic and international destinations (though international flights are mostly available only on a seasonal or chartered basis) to and from Nha Trang, and is the fourth largest airport in Vietnam.
Interestingly, the airport used to be an air base for the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
To get from Cam Ranh Airport to the beautiful beach city of Nha Trang, it is most convenient to just grab a taxi from the airport straight. With ranks outside the airport, taxis are usually readily available and charge a fixed fare of less than USD20. For those on a tight budget, public buses are also available – the Cam Ranh – Nha Trang bus costs about 30,000-40,000 VND and connects passengers straight to the heart of Nha Trang.
Once you’re in the city getting around isn’t difficult as the public bus system is efficient, extensive and cheap. If you don’t feel like navigating, though, just grab a taxi as fares are considerably less expensive than they are in most developed cities in the world.
What to see and do
When you arrive in Nha Trang, hold off the urge to immediately go rushing to the gorgeous beaches – how about a look at the Po Nagar Cham Towers, one of the most culturally significant sites in Vietnam, first? The Cham were an ancient civilisation who had ruled Vietnam at some point in history, and subsequently left a lasting influence on the architecture and art of the country. The towers were built by this ancient people between the 7th and 12th centuries for worship purposes and served as a type of Holy See, each tower honouring a different deity. Besides the architectural brilliance of the towers there is much to see; from inscribed stone slabs and ancient relics scattered all around the compound, to a 10-pillared meditation hall, steep staircases that ascend to the towers, and stone figures of mythical characters and beasts.
Now that you’ve filled your quota of cultural enrichment for the day, feel free to head to the town’s pride and joy – the beautiful beaches. Nha Trang boasts 6km of gorgeous sandy beaches that form a sweeping arc along the coastline, with a waterfront promenade to facilitate relaxing strolls. With its famous clear turquoise waters, palm trees and fine sands, the Nha Trang beaches are really picture-perfect and worry-abating. Diving enthusiasts will also be glad to know that the coral reefs just off Nha Trang’s shores are bursting with plant and marine life just waiting to be discovered. This – coupled with crystal clear waters – means you better grab your underwater camera and prepare yourself for an unforgettable diving experience. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can even rent a boat and go on an excursion off the coasts of Nha Trang, as the waters around it are dotted with countless little islands awaiting your exploration.
