Illinois’ Navy Pier covers an area that measures 1,010 metres or 3,300 feet, on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. Known as a Chicago Landmark and listed under the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the pier was built in mid to late 1910s and cost $4.5 million to complete. Among the attractions within the pier include sightseeing tours, dinner cruises, Chicago Flower and Garden Show, Chicago Children’s Museum, along with the Pier Park, to name a few.

Lincoln Tomb is the final resting places of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, along with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons. Located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, the tomb has been registered to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and among the Illinois State Historic Sites. When visiting the tomb, there is a superstition that the nose on Borglum’s head of Lincoln brings good luck. The nose remains shiny, not tarnishing or forming the brown patina, due to thousands of visitors rubbing the nose found at the base of the tomb.

How to get around

When within Illinois, travelling is mostly done by car since driving around lets travellers get to the main points of the state that are easily accessed via interstates. Travelling around Chicago, Illinois’ largest city, can be done via its public transit operated by the Regional Transportation Authority or RTA, and Chicago Transit Authority or CTA. Public transit within Chicago is mostly cheap, efficient, and safe. The RTA handles numerous public transit agencies within the Chicagoland area and also provides trip planning via the RTA trip planner. Additionally, the CTA covers the trains and buses within Chicago, along with a number of suburban areas. Chicago is best explored through the CTA, the Chicago experience is not complete without a trip on the CTA. Chicago’s L network public rail system, unlike other rail systems offers a fixed fare regardless of the miles travelled. The train lines are divided into the colours Red, Green, Brown, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Orange, and Pink. The buses within the area run throughout the major streets throughout most if not all of the city.
