Although small, Taupo Airport serves an estimated number of 35, 000 flights annually. The airport is equipped with basic facilities like a café, baggage area, internet access, a lounge for arrival and departures, an office and check-in counters.
How to get around
Taupo Airport is located 8km away from the city centre. Shuttle 2U and Alpine Hotbus are shuttle services that connect you from the airport to your place of accommodation. The Shuttle 2U service is available for 24 hours and fares depend on your destination. You can also take a taxi from the airport. Some taxi companies include Great Lake Taxis and Blue Bubble Taxis.
It is easy to travel around Taupo and modes of transport include taxis and through walking. Bus services are available to bring you around Taupo as well. You can also opt to rent bikes and scooters. Most hostels offer bike rental services. Shuttle services also bring you around the city. Shuttle 2U charges NZD4 per hop and NZD15 for a day pass to bring you around places of attraction.
What to see and do
Taupo has a population of around 23, 000. It is an urban area in New Zealand known for Lake Taupo and as a gateway to Tongariro National Park. The name of this city is translated from the Māori language and means 'the great cloak of Tia'. Tia was a Māori explorer who discovered Lake Taupo.
For the bold, tandem skydiving is a must try in Taupo. Whilst skydiving, enjoy the natural sceneries. Prices differ from the height of the jump. A 9000 ft skydive costs NZD239 whereas a 15, 000 ft skydive costs NZD339. Some skydives include souvenirs like photos and freefalls. For those who wish to enjoy the scenic natural landscapes Taupo has to offer but not skydive, helicopter trips and scenic flights are available as well.
Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake. Popular activities at the lake include cruising, kayaking, fishing and even rafting. Boats booked for fishing sail out for a minimum of two hours. The lake is famous for trout fishing.
Nature lovers can go for the Great Lake Walk. Stroll along the 7km promenade and enjoy the scenic views. Other walks include walking from the Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls. The walk takes around two hours. Alternatively, you can bike there. From Huka Falls, you may even proceed further to Aratiatia Rapids if you wish.
Visit Lake Taupo Museum and Art Gallery. There is a Tuwharetoa Gallery featuring collections from the Ngati Tuwharetoa Māori tribe. Exhibitions in the museum change from time to time. The stunning Ora Garden is located just outside the museum.
If time permits, visit Tongario National Park. It is around an hour and thirty minutes drive away from Taupo Airport. This world heritage site is home to natural landscapes, lakes, rainforests and thre volcanoes.
