Utah, also known by its nickname Beehive State, is a western state within the United States that covers a total area of approximately 220,000 square kilometres or 85,000 square miles. Known as the only state with a Mormon majority, Utah is the most religiously homogeneous state within the country. Among the states that surround Utah include Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada, towards the north, south, east, and west, respectively.

Utah is home to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, Temple Square, Lake Powell, Clark Planetarium, Discovery Gateway, Salt Lake City Council Hall, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and Big Cottonwood Canyon, in addition to many more. Salt Lake’s Temple Square refers to a ten-acre or four-hectare complex that was built in the early 1850s, by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Within Temple Square are the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake Assembly Hall, Salt Lake Tabernacle, the Seagull Monument, along with two visitors’ centres. As the most popular tourist attraction within Utah, Temple Square gets three to five million visitors annually, with more visitors than the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park, and the state’s National Parks. Discovery Gateway, formerly The Children’s Museum of Utah or TCMU, is a hands-on children’s museum within downtown Salt Lake City. Covering an area of approximately 60,000 square feet or 6,000 square metres, the museum was designed with its young visitors in mind, most, if not all, of the exhibits within the museum are interactive, and can be played with. On the museum’s second floor exhibits offer the Garden, where children are able to play music on a giant marimba, in addition to other displays.

How to get around within Utah

The Utah Transit Authority, or UTA, operates a bus system that covers several routes, like Ogden and Provo. There is also the TRAX system that is also operated by UTA. TRAX is a light rail service that goes from the University of Utah, towards downtown Salt Lake, to Sandy. Additionally, when within Utah, there is the Frontrunner, a commuter train that serves the areas within Pleasant View, and Salt Lake, with plans of an expansion that will reach Provo.

When going by road, Utah functions with a highly effective grid system, with wide roads and a numbered system that comes in intervals of 100 starting from a central point.

How to get there

Serving the northern Utah, along with its surrounding areas, is Salt Lake City International Airport, which has flights to and from local and international destinations that include, but are not limited to, Los Angeles, Portland, Boise, Paris, San Diego, Philadelphia, Austin, Chicago, Long beach, Denver, Houston, Charlotte, and Phoenix.
