Gyeongju, one-time home of the mighty Shilla Dynasty, routinely rates as one of South Korea's most popular tourist sights. With its tumli burial mounds, ancient astronomy tower, Bulguksa Temple and the lovely Seokguram grotto, it's a perfect town to tour by hired bicycle, and is NEVER more beautiful than during the spring cherry-blossom (bot ggot) season.
I'm here visiting my father's childhood stomping grounds. There are many historic sights and there's also a downtown area with shops, restaurants and bars. We had dinner at a very low-key Korean restaurant and the food was amazing (then again, food in general during this entire trip has been amazing).
I really enjoyed Gyeongju, mostly for the fact it is the cultural center of Korea. It is nice to see a lot of the history here from, buddhist temples to tombs of kings. If you really want to learn about the old history and culture of Korea, Gyeongju is a place to go.
