10 best burgers in the world

Wellington On A Plate is back, as well as the epic Burger Battle. Warning: hunger inducing images.

Wellington on a Plate is back, which means it’s time for the return of the Annual Burger Battle. There are currently 70 eateries in Wellington taking on the humble burger in a bid to win your vote, and you can try all of them in the city. Let’s see how they measure up to the offerings from around the world.

1. Ti Kouka Café, Wellington

These guys currently hold the crown of the best burger in Wellington. They use Wairarapa’s Long Horn pulled pork, middle bacon and smoked belly, combined with mint, chilli oil and hoisin mayo in their winning patty-bun combo.

2. Patty & Bun, London

We know it’s on the other side of the world, but those buttery brioche pillows make the perfect bed for hot mess of cheese, meat, onions and homemade relish inside.

3. Mary’s, Sydney

Interesting fact, this place used to be an STD clinic. That said, all of Newtown seems to be a little quirky; and Mary’s is no different. You can get your burger with a tasty serving of trash can bacon.

4. In-N-Out, Los Angeles

There’s one burger that everyone associates with L.A, and it’s always the In-N-Out. Their not-so-secret secret menu means you can get up to 4 extra patties on your bun, or the animal style fries (that’s extra sauce and cheese to you and me).

5. Fergburger, New Zealand

You may have seen the enormous queues of Kiwis and hungry skiiers standing outside Fergburger, and they’re there for a reason. The burgers are huge, and delicious.

6. Shake Shack, New York

Ah, the mothership. This is the birthplace of those Pat LaFrieda brisket, chuck and short rib quarter pounder slabs, stacked with cheese, soaked in Shack Sauce and served in a soft bun – but nowadays you can find this place all over the world.

7. Churburger, Sydney

Ok, Sydney got two entries – but they do good burgers. Churburger won Burger of the Year 2013 for their winning menu of beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish and veg creations (not all in one go though). Wash it all down with a Milo Milkshake. They’re now in Surry Hills, Manly, and soon to be Brisbane.

8. Almost Famous, Manchester

Ironically, these guys are actually famous in Manchester. The frazzles, baconaisse and chipotle ketchup makes them stand out from the crowd. Well, that and their interesting sense of decoration.

9. Fat Bob’s Bar & Grill, Melbourne

Want fries with that? No, you don’t – you want an egg with your burger from Fat Bob’s. The runny yolk perfectly compliments hand crafted, seared to perfection patties. They really do lay on all the trimmings: bacon, salsa, onions, cheese, cos & tomatoes accompany this bad boy.

10. Five Guys, Washington D.C.

When all you need is something to sober you up from the night before, none of this gourmet rubbish, Five Guys is there for you. They keep their menu super simple, including a very convincing veggie burger, and that has won them the Best Burger in New York for 2013. Well done, Five Guys.
