Cheap flights from Auckland

Domestic: Christchurch (37% saving)

One of the most popular domestic destinations from Auckland is Christchurch, giving citizens of the North Island a chance to explore the South Island. With savings of up to 37% on a return fare this August, it’s worth considering booking a cheap flight this August.

As well as the well-known favourites, there are plenty of one-off or annual events happening. The New Zealand International Film Festival is on in Christchurch from 2 August to 19 August. Rugby fans can enjoy watching the All Blacks, Canterbury and Otago take part in ‘a game of three halves’ on 10 August. Bob Dylan plays the Horncastle Arena on 28 August and the following day marks the start of the WORD writers’ and readers’ festival.

Australia: Melbourne (24% saving)

Flights from Auckland to the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney are cheaper than normal in August, with savings up to 24% available on flights to Melbourne.

Melbourne is often cited as Australia’s cultural capital. The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is the perfect starting point. The most visited gallery in Australia, you can browse more than 73,00 pieces of art during your visit. You also have Melbourne Museum, which is the largest attraction of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. For a more modern exhibit, try the Australian Centre for Moving Images (ACMI) in Federation Square.

International: New Delhi (27% saving)

Flights to India, specifically to New Delhi, are the cheapest international flights available in August. Not just from Auckland, but also from Christchurch and Wellington too.

New Delhi is the colonial centre of the capital where you can find British influence in the buildings and the tea houses. Out in Old Delhi, you can find a more historic India – with sprawling markets and delicious street food. Just outside the reach of these two areas is the next step in the city’s evolution: Gurgaon. Go here when you want to swap the aroma of the spice filled markets for the glamour of the modern shopping centres.

If you’re intrigued by that part of the world but New Delhi doesn’t appeal to you for some reason, flights to Mumbai and Colombo offer savings of up to 22% and 20% respectively.

Cheap flights from Wellington

Domestic: Queenstown (49% saving)

With up to 49% savings on flights to Queenstown, there’s no better time to book a flight to New Zealand’s adventure capital. As the ski season draws to a close, it’s a great time to hit the snow while you can, but other attractions like bungee jumping and jet boat tours are also available.

Even if you don’t want to hit the slopes yourself, you can see some of the world’s top skiers and snowboarders compete against one another as the annual Winter Games get under way on 25 August.

Australia: Gold Coast (17% saving)

Like Auckland, Christchurch has cheap flights to Melbourne in August, but like New Zealand, it’s not particularly warm there at this time of year. Alternatively Gold Coast, and most of Queensland, enjoys warm weather in August. While Wellington has average highs of 12°C and lows of 7°C, Gold Coast enjoys temperatures between 22°C and 10°C.

The beaches in the Gold Coast are what sees so many people visit. From the main stretch at Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to the quieter spots at Burleigh Heads and Miami, there are plenty of spots to enjoy whether you want to relax or surf. The Gold Coast has a growing array of pubs and restaurants, catering for all tastes and appetites.

International: Bali (21% saving)

Another cheap option for a beach holiday this winter is to book a flight from Wellington to Bali. Flights to the Indonesian island are up to 21% cheaper for a return fare in August.

Like the Gold Coast, Bali has different areas that are better suited for different holidaymakers. Kuta is famous as a party hotspot while Ubud is a tranquil getaway full of meditating tourists and local yogis. Across the island, there are various options between, allowing you to get a mix of culture, cheap local food and a relaxing time in the sun.

In August, there is very little rain in Bali and daily temperatures tend to range between 22°C and 30°C.

Cheap flights from Christchurch

Domestic: Auckland or Wellington (both 45% saving)

Citizens of Christchurch are spoilt for choice this August, with flights to the North Island’s two big cities – Auckland and Wellington – available with savings of up to 45%. Both cities have plenty to draw tourists in any month of the year. If you’re looking for something special in August, neither disappoints.

Auckland welcomes Chicago the Musical, with the run beginning on 25 August at the Civic. There’s also the Auckland Darts Masters for sports fans (3-5 August) and Katy Perry in concert for pop lovers (20 & 21 August). Meanwhile, the capital is a haven for foodies. Wellington on a Plate (https://www.visawoap.com/) is a 17-day long food festival that takes over the city from 10 August to 26 August. This starts at the same time as Beervana (10 + 11 August), a celebration of craft beer. https://beervana.co.nz/

Australia: Sydney (22% saving)

Sydney is Australia’s biggest city and, like its NZ counterpart Auckland, it’s a city that has a love affair with the water. While the beaches of Bondi and Manly might not invite you into the ocean, unless you’re a brave surfer, the beachside cafes are popular year-round.

You also have the iconic Circular Quay to enjoy, an area that should be experienced by everyone at least once. The Opera House and Harbour Bridge are two of Australia’s most recognisable structures and one of the best ways to see them is by jumping on a ferry to Manly.

Darling Harbour is another area to add to your list, with many exciting restaurants, bars and cafes competing for business on the water’s edge,. You also have attractions like the Australian National Maritime Museum, Madame Tussauds and a number of scenic cruise companies.

International: Manila (25% saving)

While the biggest savings on flights from Christchurch go to New Delhi (37%), there are also great deals on flights to Manila.

Like Bali, the Philippines offer year-round sunshine, low prices for food and accommodation and, outside the capital, some of the best beaches in the region. Manila has a mix of beguiling architecture to explore, from the sacred cathedral to the historic walking area of Intramuros. It’s also a growing city, with plenty of modern structures and shopping centres to enjoy, complete with air conditioning.

The airport in Manila connects you to the rest of the country, making it easy to explore some of the 7641 islands that make up the country. While not all have airports, some of the most tourist-friendly options, such as Palawan, are the ones that you imagine when you think of the perfect tropical getaway.
