Top 5 Domestic Destinations for Easter Getaways
Domestic destinations are key if you’re on a bit of a tighter budget, but want to make the most of your time away, and luckily we happen to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Check out our top domestic picks this Easter.
With almost all our population concentrated in Auckland, it would be a crime not to see what the fuss is all about, and believe us, the fuss is warranted. If you’ve never explored our largest city, booking flights to Auckland will mean you’re in for a world of great food, great wine, and great nightlife. Check out Ponsonby and Parnell for cooler than cool restaurants, bars, and boutique shops, or Mission Bay and St. Helliers for the beaches (contrary to the rumours, Auckland does indeed see some solid sunshine). Added to that, you have attractions like the Auckland War Memorial Museum, One Tree Hill, and the iconic Sky Tower.
If you’re after something a little different, you can take the ferry to Waiheke Island, a haven for locals who want to go hiking, biking, canoeing, and beaching. However, foodies should also take note: Waiheke Island is also home to some of New Zealand’s most famous vineyards, where wining and dining is practically an extreme sport, and a trip here is worth it whether you’re there for just the afternoon or for a few days.
Top Easter getaway for: City mixed with a little country (and wine)
Sure, Auckland has the numbers, but they say good things come in small packages, and never was this more apt than when it comes to windy, wonderful Wellington. Both our City of Culture and our capital, we’ve stuffed a ton of our best national cultural attractions into this gorgeous city on the bay. You have to see the Museum of New Zealand (or Te Papa if you don’t want to get laughed at by the locals), the Museum of Wellington City & Sea, the City Gallery, and Katherine Mansfield’s House. Once you’ve hit all those cultural heavies, you’ve got to (GOT TO) go to the Weta Cave for a peek at the inside workings of Wellywood. If you’re itching to get outside, then Welly has plenty to offer in that department too: go to the top of Mount Victoria for the best view of the city, walk along the gorgeous Princess Bay to south of Wellington, amble in the Botanic Gardens, or tour Zealandia, the city’s 225-hectare eco sanctuary, where you may be in with a chance of seeing an adorable kiwi, which never gets old.
Top Easter getaway for: Culture vultures
Just at the northern tip of the South Island lies Nelson, a small town that has captured our heart, and will capture yours. Along with its access to some of the most beautiful parts of the country, this town has somehow managed to pack in a whole host of crazy-good gourmet restaurants and hipster bars, which makes it ideal for relaxing on a long weekend break. And about those beautiful parts: there are the Nelson Lakes and the Kahurangi National Parks for those wanting to test their hiking mettle, or simply want to bask in the fantastic views. And then there is Abel Tasman National Park, which is just a stone’s throw away from Nelson, and perfect for anyone hoping to catch the last of the summer sun on their Easter travel break. You’ll find this park especially striking on a sunny day, because you’ll feel like you’re strolling along the coastline of some Caribbean island thanks to the bright turquoise waters, lush forest, and golden sand beaches.
Top Easter getaway for: outdoor enthusiasts
What can we say about Queenstown that hasn’t already been said? This gorgeous mountain resort pretty much tops every bucket list of anyone travelling to New Zealand, and so it’s only fair that we also celebrate what’s in our own backyard. This spectacular part of the Otago region was the backdrop for like half of the Lord of the Rings movies, and in person, the views are way, way better. This destination is brilliant to go to in any season, but going on an Easter break in the autumn is just a little special; the crowds of summer have dissipated and the winter skiing season hasn’t kicked off, so you may just find you get to experience the best of this town without jostling for some elbow space. Go horseriding in Glenorchy, book a tour on one of the Sounds of the Fjordland, try the adventure sports like bungee jumping or skydiving, spa hop along the lakeside, or just enjoy one of the many award-winning restaurants that have set up shop in this beautiful little town.
Top Easter getaway for: Pure New Zealand beauty
Poor old Christchurch has been through the ringer recently, but that’s what makes it such a great destination, not only because we love to throw our tourist money to places that need it, but because this is still one of the best and most important cities in the country. Go to the Canterbury Museum to learn about the city’s past, and then visit The Square to see how the city is currently rebuilding its cathedral. Then throw yourself into Christchurch life by wandering through the Cashel Street pop-up mall, go punting down the Avon River, and stroll through the Botanic Gardens. This city also makes a great base for weekenders looking to explore some of the country’s best landscapes: drive through the remarkable Arthur’s Pass, or head down to Akaroa where you should be able to spy some penguins, dolphins, or seals.
Top Easter getaway for: History and wildlife lovers
Top 5 International Destinations for Easter Getaways
Of course, not all of us want to explore our backyard, especially if that backyard is known for raining all year, amirite? If you’re looking for some sunshine, or simply want to book flights this Easter to somewhere totally new, here are our top international picks.
1. Gold Coast
Oh the Gold Coast; only a few hours away on a plane, and you can be sitting in 25°C temperatures having brunch by the sea, and that is a really hard holiday scenario to beat. If you’re looking for excellent surf, you’ve got Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads providing the waves, if you’re looking for nightlife you’ve got Surfers Paradise packed to the rafters with clubs and bars, and if you’re looking for good food, you can find amazing cafes and restaurants lining the coast from Paradise Point to Coolangatta. This is also leisure central in Australia, with golf courses, casinos, spas, and shopping malls rife in this area. Beyond that, if you’re travelling with your family there are major theme parks here, and you will hand your kids the ultimate trump card for Behaving Well Forever when they find out they’re going to be heading to Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World or Dream World for their Easter break.
Top Easter getaway for: Extending the summer.
Our second Australian pick is Melbourne, and not (GASP!) Sydney. The iconic city of Sydney is also a fantastic destination to fly to this Easter, but Melbourne edges the competition primarily because of the time of year. As Australia’s City of Culture, the autumn season is loaded with events, not least of which is the highly anticipated Melbourne International Comedy Festival. And if you’re into your events, or your comedy, this is the place to be. You’ll find the city is heaving with pop-up food markets, art installations, theatre shows, live music, and of course, a whole host of celebrities that descend on the city to try and make you laugh. Outside of this, Melbourne has loads of attractions, from their national museums and galleries, to their historical sites like the Flinders Street Railway Station, and Captain Cook’s cottage. You will also discover that Melbourne also has a reputation for some of the best coffee, food, and wine in the country, and makes for stellar jumping off point for exploring one of the nation’s best natural attractions: the Great Ocean Road.
Top Easter getaway for: events
However, moving away from Australian shores, and moving north can have you standing beneath the soaring skyscrapers and bright lights of Singapore. This destination feels almost tailor made for any proper city-slicker looking for cheap eats, lavish bars, happening clubs and, of course, shopping paradise. Shop ‘til you drop in the high-end designer malls or bargain hunt in the markets of Chinatown. Then spend some time trying the food in Little India, before heading to the swanky Raffles bar to throw back a famous Singapore Sling. If you’re feeling energetic, why not head to Sentosa for fun and adventure at Universal Studios, and then when the sun goes down have a little flutter in Singapore’s Marina Bay Sand casino.
Top Easter getaway for: Shopaholics and city slickers
New Zealand can feel pretty smug here, because when it comes to cornering the market for cheap flights to Samoa, or really any island nation in Oceania, we’ve got it covered. Sure, we get the odd deluge spot of rain, but when Samoa, one of the most gorgeous countries in the world, is a quick hop away it’s hard to feel anything but grateful. Spend a few days exploring the blue lagoons, sunbathing on pristine white-sand beaches, hiking the volcanos, and snorkelling along the coastline, and you’ll forget there was such a thing as bad weather. Go to Upolu, the island where you can see the tombs of the long buried kings of Samoa, and visit the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, where you can learn about his adventures and his inspirations for writing Treasure island, and then live them in this fantastic country.
Top Easter getaway for: Snorkeling, sun, and castaway fantasies.
Is there a bad photo that exists of Fiji? It’s like the country equivalent of Kylie Jenner. This remarkable oceanic country combined with a cheap flight from New Zealand makes for our favourite Easter getaway location. Enjoy a spot of island hopping, or simply explore Fiji’s mainland, Viti Levu, and experience the South Pacific’s warmest welcome. Go on a Blue Lagoon cruise and visit islands like Mamanuca and Yasawa, hike the trails and swim in the waterfalls of the Bouma National Heritage Park on Taveuni Island, or plunge beneath the depths and try scuba diving with the sharks! If the thought of a face to face with a shark doesn’t exactly inspire a rush to your scuba gear, then stick to what Fiji does best: their beaches. Grab your towel, some sunnies, a book, and spend the day working on your tan.
