1. Compare hotel prices with Skyscanner
You may already know that Skyscanner can help save you hundreds of dollars on flights, but did you know that we also compare the costs of hotel rooms? Using our Skyscanner search engine or the Skyscanner App, type in the city you’re travelling to as well as your dates of travel.
We’ll list our top hotel choices in the area. To check hotels in simply the best locations, view the hotels via our map.
You can filter by price, location, stay, and whether or not the hotel has key features like a pool, free wifi, or parking. Once you find a hotel room you like, we’ll redirect you to an online travel agent or the hotel to complete your booking.
2. Travel during the low season
If you’re travelling during high season, you’ll also have high costs. High seasons means crowds and competition for the best rooms in hotels. Hotels can raise their rates with confidence, knowing that travellers will have little choice but to book.
Instead, visit during the low season when hotels drop their rates by 20% or more. Even five-star hotels typically drop rates during the low season, enticing visitors to choose them over others. You’ll also see discounts at restaurants and on activities.
3. Book in advance
Hotels know that desperate travellers will pay premium prices if they’re looking at hotels the night or two before their stay. Book your hotel at least one week in advance to save on rates, or at least one month in advance if you are visiting a city during the high or holiday season.
4. Check for last-minute deals
Though booking in advance tends to be cheaper, some hotels will occasionally slash rates at the last minute to fill occupancy quotas. This is common with budget hotels and home stays, where the brand is more concerned with keeping rooms filled rather than maintaining a premium brand reputation.
5. Request an upgrade
When you check into a hotel, politely ask if there are any available room upgrades. This is one of the easiest ways to get a premium room for a standard room price. Many hotels are happy to honor this request if you’re a repeat customer or if you’re a member of their loyalty program.
6. Stay longer at hotels for steep discounts
If you’re planning to stay more than a few days in a single location, take advantage of “pay three nights, stay four nights” types of discounts. This is really common in the Pacific Islands, and many hotels are happy to give better prices for three night and up stays.
7. Compare the extras
What matters to you when it comes to your hotel room? Are you the type of traveller who can’t live without wifi? Do you hit the hotel gym every day? Will you be making the most of the hotel’s standup paddle boards, kayaks, and pool areas during your stay?
If a price looks good on the surface, get the details of what exactly is included before booking. If you’ll be purchasing wifi, breakfast, and an activity package anyways, why not just go for a slightly more expensive room where everything is included? It’s often cheaper in the end.
8. Location, location, location
Beachside properties and spots in the heart of the city know that their location alone will entice travellers to stay. Sometimes, the quality of these hotels is less than their further-away counterparts. You can save money (and usually will get a better room) if you sleep slightly away from the prime spot.
