Departing from Auckland
Auckland International Airport (AKL) is New Zealand's biggest airport, 20km south of Auckland CBD. Domestic and international flights are divided into 2 separate terminals.
Flights to Sydney from Auckland Airport leave from the International Terminal. This is open 24 hours a day. Check-in counters are on the ground floor as you enter, with restaurants, shops and other facilities divided roughly evenly across both sides of the security and bag checks.
You should aim to arrive at Auckland Airport no later than 3 hours before an international flight.
Arriving in Sydney
Sydney Airport (SYD), also called Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, is the busiest airport in Australia. It has 3 terminals:
- Terminal 1 for international flights
- Terminal 2 for most domestic flights
- Terminal 3 for Qantas domestic flights
Flights from Auckland arrive at the International Terminal, which has its own train station. Trains leave every 10 minutes and reach Sydney's Central Station in 12 minutes and cost AU$17. A taxi can cost up to AU$60, while a bus costs up to AU$9 but can take 30 minutes to reach the city centre.
You need to buy an Opal card to use public transport in Sydney, or you can hire a car from the airport.
Return flights from Sydney to Auckland
Flights to New Zealand leave from Sydney Airport's International Terminal (Terminal 1). Check-in for all airlines is on the 1st floor.
