Beware of tuk-tuk drivers who want to take you anywhere other than your intended destination (such as a jewellery shop or tailor), as this will add time and hassle onto your trip. If a driver says your intended destination is closed, it probably isn't, but they prefer to take you somewhere they get commission for taking tourists.
Departing from Phuket
Phuket Airport (HKT) is the 2nd busiest in Thailand, especially with Australian travellers. The airport is in the north of the island, half an hour away from Patong and other popular resort areas by taxi. In a shared minibus, this trip can take an hour. Taxis should cost around 900 baht (NZ$50) and buses 130 baht (NZ$6).
For flights to Bangkok, you should aim to be at the airport an hour before take-off.
Phuket has 2 terminals, with separate buildings for international and domestic passengers. The domestic terminal has free Wi-Fi (for up to 2 hours after registration), food & drink options and shops.
Arriving in Bangkok
Bangkok has 2 airports that receive flights from Phuket – Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
Don Mueang is the smaller of the pair, with fewer Phuket flights. It is 30km north of the city centre, which costs about NZ$20 in a taxi and takes 25 minutes. A train is also available, going into Hua Lamphong in the centre. This takes 45 minutes.
About twice as many Phuket flights land at Suvarnabhumi, which is 35km east of the capital. Taxi times and fares are similar to Don Mueang, but the train from here is quicker (30 minutes to Phaya Thai Station).
