To experience Miami like they do on the golden screen, head to Coconut Grove, a lovely village by the bay with sidewalks lined with cafes, galleries, and charming boutiques. With a distinct Bohemian air to it, the Grove is home to both chain restaurants and small independent stores. Take a stroll through Miami’s oldest inhabited neighbourhood, which opens up into various parks like the Barnacle Historic State Park.
Coral Gables
Or visit what is known lovingly as “The City Beautiful” – Coral Gables, famous throughout the whole region of Florida. With boulevards lined with banyan trees and rounding about sparkling fountains, Coral Gables is one of the most enchanting sites in Miami. Stroll down Miracle Mile to discover the city’s finest boutiques and artisan specialty stores, and dig into the best of local cuisine in this area.
Miami Beach
For a more relaxing day by the sea, lounge on the shores of Miami Beach, the ultimate picture-perfect attraction of Florida. The beach is flanked by museums where you can learn more about the history of the region, and a park that offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Atlantic Ocean. End your day at any one of the bars around the beach to complete your quintessential Miami experience.
Getting around
Miami is served by a number of low-cost public transportation. If you’re travelling within the city, Metromover is your wisest choice: it is a free tram that loops around Downtown Miami. For other routes, Metrorail is a commuter train that runs across the county past Downtown Miami south, and Metrobus operates many routes around the city, covering the beaches and popular tourist spots. Miami Beach is served by its own South Beach Local bus, which stops at popular spots throughout the beach.
The most common mode of payment is the prepaid and rechargeable Easy card, which can be bought at any station, but buses also accept small change. Trolleys are a more environmentally-friendly form of transport in Coral Gables and Downtown Miami. These vintage-styled vehicles channel a golden-age charm, and there are different routes travelling through Coral Gables, Miami Beach, and the main city. More information can be found on the Miami tourism webpage.
If you can afford it, taxis are a quicker and more convenient way of getting around Miami. The drivers typically charge flat rates for different destinations. Make sure to bring cash for payment, as some taxis may not be fixed with credit card terminals.
