Exceptional Team Effort Shadowed by Operational Inconsistencies

As a hospitality professional with over two decades in luxury hospitality, I rarely write detailed reviews unless I believe the feedback can genuinely help improve guest experiences.
Let me begin by appreciating the efforts of several team members who tried their best to make our stay comfortable. Front Office Associate Nishta, Restaurant Managers Ashish and Ashwin, Executive Chef Perveen, and the Duty Manager all demonstrated sincerity, professionalism, and a willingness to help whenever concerns were raised.
Unfortunately, despite these individual efforts, our overall experience fell significantly short of the standards I associate with the Taj brand.
Prior to arrival, we had requested an early check-in via email. No response was received regarding room readiness or arrival expectations. Had we been informed that rooms would not be available, we could easily have adjusted our itinerary and visited Agra first. Instead, we arrived around 8:00 AM only to learn that the rooms were unavailable, while simultaneously being informed that an additional 25% charge would apply for early check-in benefits.
The issue was never the policy—it was the absence of communication.
After some discussion, the team eventually arranged one room for us to freshen up and also accommodated our breakfast request, which was appreciated. Breakfast itself was excellent, and the restaurant team displayed genuine hospitality.
However, throughout the stay, a recurring theme emerged: lack of attention to detail.
Both Room 215 and later Room 210 were prepared with amenities for single occupancy despite the booking requirements. Additional hand towels, bathrobes, dental kits, bath mats, and other amenities had to be requested repeatedly.
Although we had specifically requested nearby rooms, our second room was allocated far away despite interconnecting rooms being available. To their credit, the Duty Manager promptly arranged Rooms 609 and 610.
Unfortunately, the new rooms appeared to have been prepared in haste.
Some observations included:
• Shower gel dispenser left unsecured beneath the counter.
• Amenities delivered loosely by hand rather than presented properly.
• QR-code-based In-Room Dining menus that did not function despite multiple attempts.
• Delays in providing a physical IRD menu.
While waiting for the menu, I examined the pillows and was initially impressed by the quality of the product. However, after turning one over, I discovered a strand of hair resting on the pillow in Room 610. While seemingly a small issue, it further reinforced the impression that room preparation and final inspection standards were lacking.
The dinner buffet, recommended by Chef Perveen, was excellent and became one of the highlights of our stay.
The following morning, amenities, tea bags, milk, water, and a carry bag were again delivered individually by hand rather than on a tray. The carry bag itself was stained internally from apparent water damage.
Beyond service inconsistencies, there were also several maintenance and presentation concerns:
• No welcome drink offered on arrival.
• Noticeable foul odour near the lobby elevator area.
• Flower arrangements containing visibly dirty water.
• Plastic grass matting in the lobby that felt out of place.
• Visible cracks in elevator marble flooring.
• Peeling paint on bathroom door handles.
Individually, these may seem minor. Collectively, they diminish the premium experience guests expect from a Taj property.
What disappointed us most is that we were genuinely considering extending our stay by an additional night. However, the accumulation of communication gaps, inconsistent room readiness, housekeeping oversights, and service delivery shortcomings ultimately changed our decision.
Following our stay, I took the time to share detailed and constructive feedback directly with the hotel management. In the hospitality industry, it is common practice to at least acknowledge guest feedback within 24–48 hours, even if a detailed investigation is required. Unfortunately, as of writing this review, it has been over a week and I am still awaiting even a basic acknowledgment of my email. This further reinforces the perception that guest feedback may not be receiving the attention it deserves.
Vivanta by Taj remains a respected brand, which is precisely why expectations are so high.
Guests willingly pay a premium not just for a room, but for consistency, attention to detail, and the seamless service experience that the Taj name is renowned for. On this occasion, while individual team members shone brightly, the overall guest journey unfortunately did not live up to that promise.
