Extremely Disappointing Stay – Left After 24 Hours

We booked a 2-night stay at Mega Resort, but unfortunately ended up leaving after 24 hours due to a series of disappointing experiences.
The first issue was with the reception team via WhatsApp. A few days before our arrival, I contacted the resort to ask about the pickup service. While they replied occasionally, they never confirmed the pickup time until 10 PM the night before check-in, informing us that pickup would be at 10 AM. Since I only saw the message the next morning, we rushed to pack and rearrange our plans, only to receive another message saying the pickup time had been changed to 9 AM.
We quickly checked out of our previous accommodation which we had thoroughly enjoyed with the expectation of an even better experience at Mega Resort.
When we arrived at around 11 AM, we were informed that our room was not ready. After climbing to the 4th floor, we found the room in an unacceptable condition, with dirty pillows and poor cleanliness overall. The staff member assisting us suggested moving to the Nemo Room instead. There was no formal check-in process, and we were not informed whether this was an upgrade or downgrade. Interestingly, the Nemo Room appeared to be priced lower online than the room we had originally booked.
The Nemo Room was acceptable, though still not particularly clean, and we decided to make the best of it. However, the air conditioning was not working. We informed the staff, who said a technician would come to inspect it.
While waiting, we went for lunch. Unfortunately, the restaurant was also poorly maintained. The sink area was flooded because it was not functioning properly, and service was extremely slow. My daughter ordered French fries, which never arrived even after two hours. The other dishes eventually arrived, fortunately the food quality was ok.
When we returned to our room around 2:30 PM, the air conditioning was still not working. After contacting the staff again, a technician finally arrived and discovered that the unit had overheated and needed to be replaced entirely. As a result, we spent nearly three hours waiting in a hot room with little else to do. I would like to acknowledge the technician, who worked hard to resolve the issue and eventually got the air conditioning running.
One of the main reasons we chose this resort was because we wanted to dive with them. We had booked a diving trip several days in advance, but the communication surrounding the activity was confusing and inconsistent. The night before our arrival, we were informed that the diving tanks were not available. Then, on the day of the scheduled dive, we were told that the dive crew was on leave. We were left unsure whether the activity had been properly organized in the first place, and it was extremely disappointing as diving was a major reason for choosing this resort.
The biggest problem came when we tried to sleep. The room was full of mosquitoes, making it nearly impossible to rest. We ended up spending most of the night trying to kill mosquitoes and repeatedly spraying insect repellent just to make the room bearable.
Beyond our room-related issues, the overall condition of the resort was disappointing. The property appeared poorly maintained and noticeably understaffed. Many of the bungalows looked dirty and neglected, giving the impression that regular upkeep was lacking. In addition, several facilities were either closed or under renovation during our stay, including the swimming pool.
After everything that had happened, we decided to leave on the second day instead of completing our planned two-night stay. Unfortunately, both my daughter and I were severely affected by mosquito bites during the night and ended up needing antihistamines afterward.
For the price charged, the overall experience fell far short of expectations. Poor communication, inadequate maintenance, cleanliness issues, unavailable facilities, cancelled diving plans, slow restaurant service, and a severe mosquito problem made this one of the most disappointing resort experiences we have had. We rarely leave negative reviews, but in this case we feel other travelers should be aware of the current condition of the resort before making a booking.

Very disappointing

The resort is very neglected. Though there is still new construction underway the original build has deteriorated and in desperate need of repair and maintenance. There was discarded construction material and rubbish strewn around the resort. The main pool was empty and many areas off limits. 1 star for the amazing staff how tried to ensure an enjoyable stay. My stay was extremely disappointing for the price considering that the resort is marketed as high end. Luckily the rest of my stay on the mainland of Karimunjawa was thoroughly enjoyable, great chilled vibe, friendly locals and interesting activities. It was a true authentic Indonesian experience.

Overrated

Unfortunately, my experience was negatively affected by poor management. Check-in was disorganized, communication was inconsistent, and customer concerns were handled poorly.

Great diving, but as a resort a disappointment — bordering on a scam

Great diving, but as a resort a disappointment — bordering on a scam
If you come here solely to dive or snorkel, it might be worth it. The dive team — especially Bram as a dive instructor — is truly excellent. The coral is more beautiful than in many other places in Indonesia. Our stilted bungalow, the Mermaid Villa, did have a truly fantastic view.
Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The photos on Booking.com hide the reality that the resort is largely a construction site, with building debris everywhere. The pool is poorly maintained, the gym has rusty dumbbells and broken equipment, and the most expensive room is badly insulated: it needs two air conditioners to stay cool, and when it’s windy, the wind literally blows inside. This feels far from sustainable and completely unworthy of the extremely high price.
There’s a constant sense of being trapped. The staff is severely understaffed and many speak limited English, although they genuinely try their best. The food was downright bad on the first day (better on the second), and the room I had originally booked was inaccessible due to construction work.
Most bizarre of all, the owner and her two family members are ruining the island with monstrous buildings that destroy its character — a truly sad sight.
For these prices, everything should be top-notch. In its current state, this comes dangerously close to being misleading.
