A treat

Beautifully refurbished and decorated building - no grey!
Just stayed the one night on our way home from the coast as a finale to our holiday. Allocated 'Manningham' on the third floor. (no lift and a narrow staircase if that's an issue for you) And if you're tall, suggest you ask for a different room as you'd need to shimmy through the bathroom avoiding beams.
Very comfortable bed, room well appointed though very few hotels get the reading lights right and this one didn't.
Had a walk round the garden before dinner and had good chats with the gardener - (who must have a way with orchids as well as everything else )-and a young chef picking herbs in the green house.
Five course menu with wine flight excellent in a lovely dining room.If wine is your thing the sommelier is keen to share his knowledge and wine list is worth a read.

DEATH TRAP HOTEL

This is a very badly run hotel by amateurs. This will certainly lose their Michelin star.
Whilst the food was good, but not Michelin star quality (hard lumps of skin in the duck)
the hotel its self is run down with big problems. Our room had the main lights stay on for no more than 10 minutes then switch off, the wall switch ( this was a dimmer ) was red hot. The bedside lights flicker and go off. Needs an electrician urgently as this is how people die. The ladies toilets there are just 2 One doesn't flush the other has no lock. Reception was aware of both these problems. Failed double glazing everywhere so much so you cant see out of some windows. Money is sadly short on maintenance.
On leaving we were offered a 10% reduction in our room rate only which was the same as the service charge they had added. As this was a birthday celebration I made no fuss as not wanting to sour the event further.
All in all a death trap hotel with people running it who have no regard to customer satisfaction and who are of the opinion that they are doing you the favour of letting you stay there.

Disappointed

This review is about the hotel not the restaurant. The restaurant is superlative.
We were not happy with our room. It needed decorating, there was chipped woodwork everywhere, and torn wall paper. The fridge was stuck in a cupboard and you could only open the door about 60 degrees. The two bedside lights on my side of the bed did not work and had not been for a while as reception knew about it. We had no bath mat and the window was very difficult to open. The view out of the window was nonexistent, just a tiled pitch roof. The air con was very noisy.
Our room was called Holkham… don’t get put in there.
The grounds are pleasant as is the dining room and sitting rooms.

Excellent stay

We last went to MH 4 yrs ago with family for a special birthday celebration and enjoyed a superb stay. As it was a milestone anniversary last yr our family bought a voucher for us to use. Given since then it has changed hands and some of the reviews are mixed would it compare well? Yes it did. We stayed in a pavilion suite which was huge. The room had everything you need from an ironing board to a sewing kit. It also benefited from a private outdoor seating area which was lovely. The food was excellent. Just the right size portions. We found the staff attentive but not overwhelming. Breakfast was ok. We also received a complimentary cream tea which was a nice touch. The only slight criticism was that service could be a bit slow at times. It did take nearly 3 hrs for the dinner but then you are on holiday. It certainly isn’t cheap but as a special treat well worth it.
