###Driving around Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Alaska Route 1 (AK 1) is the numbered state highway in Anchorage, running from Homer northeast and east to Tok via Anchorage. It is known as Sweard Highway, southbound from the Fairview neighbourhood, and connects Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula. Eastbound from the Mountain View neighbourhood is the Glenn Highway, still part of Alaska Route 1, which runs from Anchorage near Merrill Field to Glennallen on the Richard Highway. Often considered part of the highway is the Tok Cut-Off. Seward Highway and Glenn Highway are the only two roads out of Anchorage. Within the city centre, AK 1 is called Gambell and Ingra Streets, and East Fifth and East Sixth Avenues.
###Getting to your destination
Seward is a city in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Borough. Tourist attractions in Seward include Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska SeaLife Center, Seward Silver Salmon Derby, Seward Polar Bear Jump-Off, the ruins of the Jesse Lee Home for Children, and Mount Marathon and its famous Mount Marathon Race, held every 4th of July. The drive to Seward from Anchorage on AK 1 takes somewhere between two and three hours.
The waterway Turnagain Arm into the northwestern part of the Gulf of Alaska is one of the narrow branches of Cook Inlet. Seward Highway passes right along the shorelines of Tumagain Arm, and the area is considered to be one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the country. You'll be able to see the 3,000-foot mountains in Chugach State Park on the left. On the right, the tides of Turnagain Arm are highly impressive. Turnagain Arm is situated south of Anchorage.
Portage Glacier is literally a glacier, south of Portage Lake and included within the Chugach National Forest. Drop by the Begich/Boggs Visitor Center on the shores of Portage Lake, but it is recommended to take a commercial boat tour across the lake to view the glacier. You can take a ranger-guided nature hike along the Moose Flats Wetland Trail. There are two excellent campgrounds in the valley. Portage Glacier road is 50 miles southeast of downtown Anchorage. It is accessible by road via the Seward Highway as a side trip after Turnagain Arm.
