Discover Boston
The shining capital of the state of Massachusetts, the United States, Boston is exemplary of how modern living has reached out to embrace historic old-world charm. A highly-developed city with a relatively small population, Boston holds remarkable status in the country for its repertoire of significant cultural and historical landmarks. Travellers in the know stay away from this city during its bitter winters, instead flocking here for its glorious Spring, Fall, and Summer seasons.
What to see and do
Boston is famed among visitors for its four kilometre-long Freedom Trail, a stretch of preserved and reconstructed buildings that records the events of the Revolutionary War. Its North End is also known as Boston’s Little Italy, and draws tourists with its main star: the home of legendary patriot Paul Revere.
The Old North Church here is another key attraction, housing the two critical lanterns that alerted Paul Revere to the incoming British sea invasion in 1775. There are numerous more historical buildings along this famous belt that history buffs would have a field day with.
For the art and culture enthusiasts, South End may prove to be a more fitting treat. Once a back-alley district, it is now bursting with the youthful fervour of manicured townhouses, design boutiques, and some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes. Nearby, SoWa (South of Washington) is lined with upscale contemporary art galleries, where the SoWa Art Walk weekend in Spring opens artist workshops to the public.
And of course one of Boston’s greatest prides is the Red Sox, one of the country’s major league baseball teams. Their home field, the renowned Fenway Park, lies right in the middle of the city, and is open to public even off-season. Get a tour of the stadium, grab a pint at one of the two bars here, or if you’re lucky, catch the Red Sox and its raving fans in action right here.
Getting around
Public transport in the city is operated by the MBTA, which runs the subway, train, and buses. Taxis are also available and operate under the Clean Air Cab programme. But walking is probably the most common way to get around, and the city is well-marked with pedestrian crossings and safety signs. Water taxis ferry locals and visitors to outlying neighbourhoods from the city’s Harbour, and is a great way to admire the Boston skyline.
