###What to expect when hiring a car from Johannesburg Johannesburg is best and easiest explored by car. Not only will renting a car make your stay in Johannesburg much more comfortable, it will make travelling more convenient, especially since the city's public transportation system is not very well-developed yet. Fortunately, the roads and highways in Johannesburg are in excellent condition, with adequate signage. There is more than enough parking; you can park in any of the multi-storey car parks or on the street for a fee.
The speed limit for city streets is generally 60 km/h. For main streets, the speed limit is usually 80 km/h, while for highways it is usually 100 km/h or 120 km/h.
Be wary on the road as Johannesburg drivers are known to be the most aggressive in South Africa. Taxi drivers especially are prone to stop to let passengers on or off with little or no warning. Rush hours are from 7:00AM to 8:30AM, and 4:00PM to 6:30PM, so as much as possible avoid driving during this time. At the very least, avoid the main roads.
