###What to expect when hiring a car from Stockholm Stockholm is located at the junction of the European routes E4, E18, and E20. There is also a motorway ring road, although half-completed, on the southern and western parts of the city centre. As the city is spread across islands, some motorways are built as tunnels and bridges. Motorways and roads in Stockholm are relatively free of traffic in terms of international standards, which makes driving in Stockholm easy compared to many larger capital cities in the world. Just make sure to always look out for the occasional deer or elk crossing the road, and to use your indicators when changing lanes.

When driving into or out of the city centre from 6:30AM to 6:29PM on weekdays, you will be charged a congestion tax with the rates depending on the time of day. Some car hire companies will already charge you separately for toll passages, while others don’t, so it is important to take note of this when renting a car. However, foreign registered vehicles are exempted from the tax. Furthermore, there are no toll fees in July, on holidays (including Sundays), and on the day before a holiday (including Saturdays). Parking can be limited and expensive in the city centre, while free parking is infrequent even in the suburbs. However, you can find free parking at shopping centres outside of central Stockholm.
