Bangkok is most popular in the dry season from November to March, when temperatures are warm and there's less chance of rain spoiling your sightseeing. However, this is also when the city is busiest and hotel deals are more scarce.

Unless you're looking for discounts, you may prefer to avoid the hot summer months of April and May and the wet season from June to October.

How expensive is Bangkok?

Bangkok and Thailand in general are very cheap for New Zealand travellers. A few dollars will pay for a meal or a beer, and prices are even cheaper if you buy from local eateries, street vendors and convenience stores.

Arriving in Bangkok

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is the main point of entry to Bangkok. Located 25km from the city centre, it's connected to the MRT by the Airport Rail Link (45 baht), public buses (60 baht) and taxis (up to 500 baht for Khao San Road).

Some flights arrive at Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK), especially if the last leg of your journey is with a budget airline. This is the older of the city's 2 airports and closer to the city, which means taxis can be cheaper (300-390 baht), but journeys can take longer due to traffic.

Bangkok is not a pedestrian-friendly city. You'll get the best experience by putting down the guidebook and arranging a guided tour by taxi or tuk-tuk.

Make sure you stay hydrated. Bottled water is widely available from stores and street vendors, but you should make sure it's sealed.
