What is Asia like?

With Asia being the world's largest continent, there's a huge shift in what you can see from country to country, never mind from coast to coast.

As the closest continent to New Zealand and Oceania, the south-eastern tip of the region is hugely popular among holidaymakers – including Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. These countries also have the huge benefit for New Zealanders of giving a very good exchange rate and cheap cost of living.

Other areas of the continent are popular too, including China, Japan and Korea. As we start to explore more of the world, it's often Asia that we explore first.

What are the cheapest Asian destinations from New Zealand?

Malaysia

With direct flights to Kuala Lumpur available from Auckland, getting to Southeast Asia has never been cheaper or easier. Malaysia's capital is the perfect example of a developing Asian city, merging its Asian roots with modern developments, much like nearby Singapore. As well as the Petronas Towers, you can make use of Kuala Lumpur's modern transit system to flit between the new, chic and massive shopping centres or stick to older attractions like China Town, Little India and the Batu Caves.

Indonesia

Thanks to the popularity of Bali, Indonesia is one of the most commonly visited countries by Kiwis. The island offers plenty of different ways to enjoy your holiday – Kuta is the party centre, with cheap beers and sandy beaches; Seminyak is popular with families and those who prefer slightly more upmarket dining, and Ubud is the spiritual centre full of yoga and meditation retreats.

The cheapest flights to Bali are available from Auckland, where you can get direct flights with Air New Zealand<.

Vietnam

While Thailand has long been the Southeast Asian country of choice for Oceania travellers, Vietnam has been growing hugely in popularity in recent years. Ho Chi Minh City is the most common entry point, although those spending time in nearby countries often enter in the north and head to the capital Hanoi. Seasoned travellers like to compare Vietnam of today with Thailand of yesteryear – keeping plenty of its original charm, without too much commercial development.
