Founded in 1785 by the Brits, Sydney is a community and a now-defunct city in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is situated on the east coast of Cape Breton Island. Now the settlement has been merged with Nova Scotia, and the capital moved to Halifax. A quiet town by global standards, it is supported by a small industry mostly comprising customer service call centres and tourism companies. The town is also the main port on Cape Breton Island and serves as a connecting point to nearby places such as North Sydney and Glace Bay. Despite not being a touristy town, it has a few attractions to offer, most notably remnants of its coal mines which dotted the area in the yesteryears. The town is served by the Sydney Airport (IATA: YQY), which offers flights to multiple destinations via Air Canada and Westjet.

The town can be reached by road through the Canso Causeway that connects Cape Breton Island to the Nova Scotia mainland near Port Hawkesbury. There onward, you can take Highways 105 and 125 (via Baddeck and North Sydney) or Route 4.

Lacking a major tourist industry, one would expect there would not be many accommodation options in Sydney. But contrary to this belief, there are plenty of hotels, motels and inns offering a wide range of stays to visitors who arrive here for tourism purposes or just for a brief stopover. Most importantly, one should know which part of the town he or she intends to stay. Most of the city’s famous landmarks are within the downtown are at walking distance from the city centre. Having said that, all major tourist attractions are outside the city and would require pre-arranged transport, such as rented car or bus. There are local bus services operated by Transit Cape Breton, that provide transport within Sydney, hourly transfers to Dominion and Glace Bay, and infrequent transfers to North Sydney, Sydney Mines and New Waterford. Some popular accommodation options in Sydney, Canada include: the Cambridge Suites (380 Esplanade) which is a good hotel but not ideal for families; Days Inn Sydney (480 Kings Road) that has also has a pool, sauna, hot tub, and gym; Delta Sydney (300 Esplanade) featuring conference facilities and ballrooms, in addition to a large swimming pool, waterslide, gym and sauna; Quality Inn (560 Kings Road),that offers free Internet, restaurant, pool, exercise room, executive suite and free parking; Beacon Motel (294 Keltic Drive), which is cheaper and located around 10 minutes outside of the downtown; in addition to many others.
