What is Canada like?

Canada, and Vancouver in particular, is a holiday destination that's growing in popularity with New Zealanders. While the trendy cities, the French-speaking area and the ski fields grab the plaudits, there's also much to see and do in-between. Grab a rail ticket and go from coast to coast, head north to the icy lands or stick to the lesser-known spots of beauty, such as the many found in Nova Scotia, to explore more of the Great White North.

What is the best time to visit Canada?

Canada has plenty to appeal no matter what season you visit. The ski fields, mostly in Alberta and British Columbia in the west, are popular in the winter. This lasts from December to February in the Northern Hemisphere.

As the snow disappears, the country's wildlife reappears from hibernation and the fauna comes out in full colour. The summer is warm by New Zealand standards, so long as you don't go too far north.

Do I need a visa for Canada?

Yes. New Zealand citizens need to get an eTA or some form of working holiday visa to visit Canada.

How expensive is Canada?

Vancouver and Auckland are very similarly priced, but there are a lot more fast food options in Canada's cities. Expect to pay a dollar or 2 more in an upmarket Canadian restaurant.

Beer tends to be a bit cheaper in North America, while takeaway coffees are around the same price. During your trip, you'll spend Canadian dollars.
