The airport has been in operation since 1939. Privatised in 1995, it's today one of the few privately-owned regional airports in the country, and the low frequency of scheduled flights makes it a popular base for private and charter flights, helicopter flights and pilot training.
Blenheim is the most popular route from Paraparaumu. The flight only takes 25 minutes and leaves 18 times a week on average.
Flights to Nelson leave 6 times a week and take about 40 minutes.
Both air2there and Sounds Air have regular departures from Paraparaumu. However, it's important to note that air2there flights depart from a separate facility on 231 Kapiti Road, near to the airport's control tower, rather than the main airport.
Air New Zealand used to offer flights from Paraparaumu to Auckland, but these stopped in April 2018.

Paraparaumu Airport (PPQ) is located around 4km from Paraparaumu town centre. It's officially known as Kapiti Coast Airport.
You can get there in 15-20 minutes by bus (line 260, $2) or in 5-10 minutes by taxi ($20-$25). If you're travelling by private car, short-term and long-term parking are available, which should be paid and displayed on arrival. It's recommended that you arrive at least 1 hour before your flight to avoid problems.
This small airport has limited facilities, but you can get something to eat or drink at the i-land cafe or relax in the public lounge while waiting for your flight. The airport opens based on arrivals and departures, which can vary with the seasons and public holidays.
