Valencia Airport serves the historical city of Valencia, approximately eight kilometres away from the city centre. In terms of passenger traffic, Valencia Airport ranks as the eight busiest in Spain, and second busiest in the region next to Alicante Airport. The airport is adjacent to the Autovía A-3 highway, connecting Valencia and Madrid, and its proximity to the Autovía A-7 coastal route allows passengers to cross over Barcelona. Valencia Airport serves as the main base of Air Nostrum, Iberia’s regional carrier. Valencia Airport has one runway, one terminal, and a helipad at its south western end.
What to see & do
A modern city with a historical splendour, Valencia is ranked the third Spanish city in terms of importance. Under its belt, it hosted America’s Cup in 2007 and 2010, as well as oversees the construction of the City of Arts and Science, a notable destination in the city. Constructed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the colossal work of art houses fine entertainment selections; the IMAX cinema, the Oceanogràfic, Europe’s largest aquarium, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, an avant-garde opera house, as well as the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, which houses interactive, educational exhibits.
Step out of the grand city, immerse yourself in the Mercado Central, one of Europe’s biggest markets, and mingle with the locals. The La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange), a UNESCO landmark, marks the site of the ancient local silk trade. In the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, you can also admire the beautiful landscape of the city and some iconic landmarks. Its triangular layout, featuring a fountain in its central, and colourful flower stalls can surely brighten any tourists. In March, the Plaza is also witness to the Fallas Festival, with tradition tracing back to the city’s carpenters who burn useless things and other wooden utensils that once served its purpose during the winter season. Present-day Fallas Festival includes burning of big papier mache models, as well as grand fireworks display that runs for a week, three times a day.
Food is also an important factor to look forward, or rather, taste, in the city with its appetising paella, almost everyone’s favourite. The well-reputable dish has varying versions, each giving out a distinct flavour. Eat your heart out in Restaurante El Palmar at Albufera Natural Park, where you can have a taste of the authentic Valencian paella.
