With a number of destinations to choose from across Europe and the Middle East, it can be hard to know where to fly next. Skyscanner's map function can help, by letting you see quickly and easily where you can fly to from Athens. Green circles on the map indicate airports that can be reached with a direct flight.

Alternatively, if your route is finalised but you just need to work out the best dates to fly, you can search Skyscanner for flights across a whole month. This lets you see which days are cheapest, so you can get the best airfare available.

Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport is a popular travel hub for the region, and as a hub for Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Ryanair, it has plenty of flight options available.

The airport has two terminals, which are connected by an underground link. The main terminal is in use throughout the year, while the satellite terminal is only open on a seasonal basis over the European summer.

Unless you're driving, you have the option of either a taxi or the subway to get to the airport. A taxi is the quicker of the two (25 minutes vs 40 minutes), but also more expensive.

Popular destinations from Athens International Airport

Greece is loved for its food, heritage and beaches. While you'll get the first two in Athens, it's the islands you'll want to visit for the beaches. A flight from Athens to Crete, Mykonos or Santorini will set you right, and the myriad options mean you can always find a cheap flight to suit.

For a different type of holiday, head north to Budapest. The capital of landlocked Hungary has no beaches, but it does have plenty of incredible city landmarks – and with fantastically low costs, you won't find it hard to stretch your holiday budget.

Athens International is limited in terms of long-haul flights, but it does offer a direct route to Tehran. The Iranian capital is adored for its beauty, with a number of palaces, mosques and parks to take your breath away. Close to the city are a number of mountains, which are perfect for snowboarding and skiing in the winter.
