The Hellenic Republic, referred to as Greece, is a country in Southern Europe, situated at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe. The Greeks call the country Hellas or Ellada, but is often called Greece outside of the country. The term came from the Latin word 'Graecia,' which translates to 'the land of the Greeks,' as used by the Romans. The largest city and capital of Greece is Athens.
Where to go
There are several magnificent historical landmarks and monuments to see in Greece, such as the Temple of Poseidon, Hadrian's Arch, the Venetian Fortress, and more. If you think you can handle it, hiking-lovers are invited to go trekking on Mount Olympus. Not only is it the highest mountain in Greece, it is also the mythical home of ancient Greek Gods! However, note that a good level of fitness is required for the climb so make sure you're in good shape!
It would be worth it to also make a trip to Santorini, the most popular island in Greece. Its fame is due to the fact that it offers ancient cities, fantastic beaches, amazing restaurants, spectacular scenery, and we kid you not, is literally one of the most breath-taking places to watch the sunset.
Greece's neighbouring countries are always great places to go for a short out-of-the-country plane ride. Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, is a vibrant yet peaceful modern city filled with quaint cobblestone streets and surrounded by approximately 24,000 rocky islands. Here you can find the only preserved 17th century ship in the world: the Vasa. The Vasa Museum contains the original 69-metre long warship which had been restored to its near-original state for nearly half a century, hence the tagline “From WRECK to state of the ART.” Stockholm also maintains another, yet completely different, museum. ABBA The Museum is an interactive exhibition about and dedicated to the famous group ABBA. It contains the pop group's collected works, as well as some of the members' actual stage costumes and several audio and video stations wherein visitors can perform the band's music.
The Netherlands is only a couple of hours away as well. Many have heard of the famous Dutch pale lager Heineken Beer, and those who haven't will soon know more about it at the Heineken Experience. This industrial facility is a historic brewery but also a corporate visitor centre for fans of the internationally distributed Dutch pilsner.
Want to stay on the plane longer? Then plan your trip at just the right time to book a seasonal 10-hour flight to the JFK Airport in North America! The city of New York, oh so famous for its busy streets and world-class Broadway shows, also houses the beloved Central Park, the iconic Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is among the world's best art museums.
Otherwise, practice your Singlish and head off to Singapore, where there are countless things to do aside from shopping for designer clothes, dining at the best restaurants, and watching films at the theatre. Try out the world's largest observation wheel (it's 165 metres high!), the Singapore Flyer, or say hello to 315 species of animals and the world's largest captive colony of orangutans in Singapore Zoo. Formerly known as Singapore Zoological Gardens, it is popular for being the best zoo in Asia and the best rainforest zoo in the world. This comes as no surprise considering that the zoo offers exhibits wherein animals are kept in naturalistic habitats with hidden barriers, plenty of shows to witness, a chance to experience riding an elephant or pony, go on tours or camps, and so much more!
How to get out
The best way to get in and out of the country is through the Athens International Airport, the biggest airport in Greece. It is located in Spata, and serves Athens and the region of Attica. The airport serves as the hub for Aegean Airlines, SkyGreece Airlines, and Olympic Air.
