If you’re living in Gisborne, you’ll be proud to claim that the city is the first to see the sun each day. Gisborne is a great place to relax and put your feet up for a few days, sunbathe on the beaches and sip some heavenly wine. It is also a great place for surfers to hit out into the waters and overcome some killer waves. Go on vineyard and winery tours to taste some of the most unique, full-flavoured, award-winning wines of international standards. Rent some boogie boards and slide down the stream at Rere Rockslide. Gisborne is the place to visit if you want to escape from the frantic pace of city life.
Located just 3km west of the city, Gisborne Airport is a small basic airport that provides the usual facilities such as ATMs, restaurants and shops to its visitors. There is a small array of shops and restaurants for the visitors to choose from though. Gisborne Airport is one of the few airports in the world that operates a railway line crossing the main runway. Air New Zealand offers cheap and discounted tickets to and from Auckland and Wellington daily. Sunair Aviation operates flights to Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier and Rotorua on a daily basis on weekdays. Visitors can choose to explore the city from the airport by hiring a taxi from outside the terminal buildings. Alternatively, visitors can choose to rent cars from the various Avis, Budget and Hertz counters at the airport terminal.
A short ride on Air New Zealand will take you to the awe-inspiring town of Queenstown. It is here where you will have the chance to experience the incredible world of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The scenery in this town is spectacular with snow-capped mountains and the calm Lake Wakatipu. There are a number of walking trails and mountain bike tracks which will take into the Ithlien Camp. If you have money to splurge, view the misty mountains with a helicopter operator. Ride the Skyline Gondola up to Bob’s Peak for a beautiful panoramic view of the Coronet Peak, The Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. For a rush of adrenaline, consider bungee jumping off Kawarau Bridge.
Hamilton is the place to visit if you are a true blood fan of the Lord of the Rings. Take a short drive east to Matamata and visit The Shire, the Hobbit-sized village created specially for the movie. Go underground to the Waitomo Caves to discover the blue lights of glow worms and the amazing natural beauty of stalactites and stalagmites. For the adventurous, be sure not to miss black water rafting and abseiling. Nature lovers can head to Maungatautari Ecological Reserve where they can walk around freely without fear of predators. Hamilton is a place that is full of nature and amazing attractions that will leave you craving for more!
If you haven't had enough of nature, head to the scenic city of Auckland which is surrounded by nature. Go on a drive up one of Auckland’s many volcanic cones. Be sure to head up One Tree Hill, Mount Eden or Mount Victoria to experience one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the city. If you’re a cricket fan, catch a cricket game at the Eden Park but be sure to book your tickets fast before they get sold out. Rent skates and take a scenic skate along Hibiscus Coast and Long Bay. Stop for tea or a snack at one of the many waterfront cafes at the historic Devonport.
