Labasa Airport is becoming an increasingly popular travel destination. Although direct flights straight to the island aren’t possible, there are frequent and direct connecting flights from Fiji’s main Nadi International Airport. The airport is located about 11km southwest of Labasa. Air Pacific operated by Pacific Sun goes frequently to Nadi, Suva from Labasa Airport.
What to See and Do
Labasa (pronounced Lambasa) belongs to the Macuata Province and is located around 5 km inland on the northeastern part of the Fijian island of Vanua Levu. The city sits upon the banks of the Labasa River and is built on reclaimed mangrove frost. The town’s main street is bursting with vibrant human activity, not to mention the sounds of Bollywood, while the people buzz about in the many stalls selling all sorts of exotic gifts and having a general chin wag with their neighbours, friends and colleague. Most visitors will end up going to the town of Savusavu as it boasts the more popular attractions.
There are a few excellent diving tours on offer at Savusavu and you really can’t go wrong at choosing one over the other, but the most popular one seems to be the family-owned company “KoroSun Dive”. This dive centre prides itself on safety but at the same time provides its customers with lasting memories and wonderful experiences that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
For a refreshing break away from the towns and beaches, why not go for a hike to the Nakawaga Waterfall. To get there, you need to walk up along a dirt path through the lush rainforest. You can also get to the waterfall on a pony. Do make sure to hire a guide so that you don’t get lost halfway.
The Wasisali Rainforest Reserve is another stunningly gorgeous and beautiful rainforest with a fantastic bush walk that leads to refreshing swimming pools and waterfalls. The wildlife here is so friendly you’ll hear the birds sing from the moment you enter to the moment that you leave. In case you are not sure of which way to walk or what pools to swim in, there are adequate signs up to meet all your needs.
From the airport, there are regular buses from the airport to Labasa town, which cost 55 cents. The airport also has a taxi service with a flat fare of $7. Many hotels and resorts on the island provide a free shuttle bus, which must be booked in advance.
The public transport system throughout Fiji is pretty cheap and expansive. There are a variety of options available, including buses, shared taxis and private taxis. If using the taxis it is important to make sure that the meter is running before setting off. There are 5 daily buses between Labasa and Savusava that run from 7 am to 4.15pm, and a scenic route bus that departs at 9am takes up to six hours to reach. There are also buses to Nabouwalu that departs 3 times daily, Monday to Friday.
Bicycles are becoming a popular and fitting mode of transport throughout Fiji, although it’s best to shop around for the best deals.
