Welcome to probably one of the most gorgeous coastal capitals in the world, Suva! Savusavu is the official port of entry into the exotic and mesmerising country of Fiji. This town located along the coastline of Southern Vanua Levu is bustling with yachts coming in and out of the town. Many travellers use the yacht focused town as a base for exploring the less explored islands of Northern Fiji.
Nestled in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it may seem extremely difficult to reach this paradise but fret no, there are regular flights from many international destinations such as Auckland, Christchurch, Brisbane and Vancouver flying to Nadi International Airport. From Nadi International Airport, visitors are expected to take another direct flight to the hidden paradise of Savusavu. The airport in Savusavu is extremely basic and there is little facilities for visitors. From the airport, visitors have the option of taking either the taxis or the local buses to the city centre. Both options are affordable and plentiful on the island.
There is a full range of activities that visitors can indulge in on the island during their stay. From scuba diving to snorkelling to watching the locals play a game of rugby, from island tours and shopping to beach-bumming and reading on a hammock, Savusavu has it all. For those who aren't so adventurous, pamper yourself with a visit to a spa, village tours, a trip to the open air market or sample local food at the restaurants at the waterfront. There is always something to do for everyone on this island! To get from one destination to another, consider taking the taxi but do negotiate a reasonable price.
Go on a 40 minute cruise with J Hunter Pearl Farm Tour to understand more about pearl oysters and their different stages of growth. Get close to the cleaning platforms where you are able to observe farm workers cleaning and checking on the health of the juvenile and adult oysters in the ocean. This is a unique experience not to be missed!
If you have money to splurge, be sure to go on the Tui Tai Expedition Cruises, the only tour operator in the South Pacific to be featured in the National Geographic’s annual “Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth” survey. Guests would be able to gain unprecedented access to the different distinct societies of the Pacific Cultural Triangle of Islands and learn more about the culture and history of these societies. There are on-board spa, daily yoga and even an on-island massage in front of stunning waterfalls which guests can indulge in. If you enjoy meditation, fancy a session atop a volcanic crater?
For nature lovers, there are various tours offering extensive hiking and mountain biking opportunities to secluded parts of the island. Explore hidden villages, waterfalls and rainforest treks to discover the amazing range of flora and fauna on this island. There are even snorkelling and scuba diving tours to some of the world’s best reefs and dive sites in the world! Swim amongst manta rays, reef sharks and a kaleidoscope of colourful fish of all sizes and shapes.
The island does not have a vibrant night life but there are a number of restaurants on the island offering one of the most delicious food. Visitors would be spoilt for choice by the range of Chinese, Indian, island style and mixed continental menus. Don’t know what to eat? Simply grab a slice of pizza or sandwich at the copra Shed and sit on the dock while watching the sun disappear into the horizon. If you want to interact with the locals, head to the Savusavu Yacht club or the Wi Tui Club.
This is an island paradise where you would be able to relax for a couple of days, away from the hustles and bustles of city life. This is a place where you are able to appreciate extraordinary wonders of Mother Nature - a paradise for everyone!
