London Gatwick Airport (LGW)

Gatwick is 1 of 6 airports in London, and the 2nd busiest of those behind Heathrow. Gatwick is 50km south of the centre of London.

It's a hub for national carrier British Airways, and has a mix of full-service and low-cost airlines to choose from. Direct flights are available to countries all over the world, from most of Europe out to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

London Gatwick Airport has 2 terminals: the North Terminal and the South Terminal. All easyJet flights use the north facility, while British Airways is focussed in the south.

The terminals have similar facilities – the North Terminal has 17 restaurants and cafes to the South's 15, and 29 shops to the South's 30. The Gatwick Airport website has guides to the 2 terminals that include discount vouchers and runs competitions for flights. For the true British shopping experience, both terminals have a Harrods store in their departure lounges.

 Getting to & from the Airport

Driving hide 

Car hire at London Gatwick is available from 8 different rental companies, including Europcar, National and Sixt. Representatives of these companies can be found in both terminals.

Trains hide 

Gatwick's rail station is found by the South Terminal, which is just a short walk from the North Terminal. From here, you can get to 129 stations in the UK without having to change trains.

The trip into London Victoria takes half an hour from Gatwick, with departures every 15 minutes during peak times. The cheapest way to get tickets for this train is with London's Oyster card.

Buses hide 

Although there are public buses to nearby villages, you'll need to catch a coach if you want to go to London. National Express ticket desks for this journey are available in both terminals, while easyBus, affiliated with easyJet, go to London Victoria from just £2. Megabus is also available from £1, but both of these services are a lot more expensive the closer to the day of travel you buy your ticket.

Taxi hide 

Taxi stands are available at both terminals. A fare to Central London is likely to be around £90 and take around 50 minutes. If you need to get fro Gatwick to Heathrow, this will be around the same in terms of fare and time.
