Flying with British Airways

British Airways (BA) is the United Kingdom's flag carrier airline. Founded in 1974 and privatised in 1987, it's the largest airline in the UK in terms of fleet size and the second after easyJet by passenger numbers.

BA has hubs at London's 2 busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick. It was one of the founding members of the oneworld alliance and formed the International Airlines Group (IAG) with Iberia in 2011. Its subsidiary airlines are BA CityFlyer, based at London City Airport, and transatlantic carrier OpenSkies.

Why book with British Airways?

British Airways flies to more than 160 destinations worldwide, and is one of a small number of airlines that regularly visit all 6 permanently inhabited continents. Beyond its extensive network, BA flights are popular for the quality of their on-board entertainment, catering and competitive businesses classes, including its premium Club World class for long-haul flights.

Why fly with British Airways

British Airways check in

You can check in for BA flights at the airport, online or on mobile using the British Airways app.

Online and mobile check-in are available from 24 hours before your flight. You can print or download boarding passes for up to 8 passengers on the same phone.

If you prefer to check in at the airport, you can use self-service kiosks or check-in desks. Passengers on flights from London Gatwick departing before 3.15pm can check in the previous day if preferred.

The closing time for check-in depends on the airport you're flying from and the type of flight.

British Airways baggage allowance and fees

All passengers can take 1 item of hand luggage (measuring up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm) and 1 small item such as a handbag or laptop (40cm x 30cm x 15cm) on board their flight. Each item must weigh no more than 23kg, otherwise it will be counted as checked baggage.

Depending on the route you're flying and your fare type, you may be entitled to between 23kg and 32kg of checked luggage (up to 90cm x 75cm x 43cm per item). Excess baggage is charged at £40-£65 per bag, but you can save money by pre-booking additional bags online (£20-£40 for the 1st bag, £36-£60 for each additional bag).

British Airways seat selection

Seat selection depends on your ticket type and personal circumstances. You may choose your seat at the time you book your flight or later through Manage My Booking on the BA website.

All fares apart from Basic tickets (economy, hand baggage only) allow you to choose a seat for free when you check-in. If you want to book your preferred seat ahead of time, this will cost from £7-£20 in economy or £20-£55 in business class.
