Cheap flights from Tajikistan

The Republic of Tajikistan is a landlocked sovereign country in Central Asia. It has at least eight million residents in 2013, placing it as the 98th most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Tajikistan’s current territory was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm of the Neolithic and Bronze Age. It was later home to the kingdoms ruled by different faiths and cultures, and has been the seat of numerous empires and dynasties.

Today, Tajikistan stands as a presidential republic divided into four provinces. Most of Tajikistan’s population belong to the Tajik-speaking ethnic group, a dialect of Modern Persian antiquity. Russian is also spoken here. Further, the country’s economy is a transitory one - and is mainly dependent on aluminium and cotton production.

Where to go

Ancient Penjikent - lying above the banks of the Zerafshan River and located 1.5km southeast of today's Penjikent, the ancient ruins of Penjikent was briefly one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the Silk Road. The palace located here was originally decorated with ornate hunting scenes and pillars carved in the shape of dancing girls. And although most of the structures are destroyed, today’s site is clearly a magnificent city of yesterday. Most of the foundations of numerous former buildings in what was the main shakhristan (town centre) are still recognisable, along with hints of an outlying rabad (suburb) and necropolis.

Jafr Afro-Eco Centre - created through the efforts of Mirzosho Akobirov, this afro-eco centre is home to many local and exotic fruit trees and various plants. Many of the trees have curiously grafted several fruit types into single fruit stocks, such that a pistachio tree might simultaneously be producing plums and apricots. Apart from the plants, a museum and a handicraft centre is also under construction. Mirzosho and the centre may also organise guides and horses for hiking up the valley and - possibly beyond over a pass into the bucolic Yasman area through the centre.

Hulbuk Palace - Hulbuk Palace was one of the four biggest sites of Central Asia, and the seat of the Shah of Khatlon. It guarded a giant salt hill, which was of great trading value as well as forming part of the silk routes. The palace was destroyed by the Mongols; the sparse remnants have been undergoing excavation since 1951. As of date, a grand new museum will bring life to the finds, adding to the remarkable reconstruction of the palace walls, minaret, and battlements.
