London Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe, and one that Air New Zealand flies to every day of the week. London is a vast city with much to offer, and it's a great springboard to see the rest of the UK, as well as much of Europe.
Where to go in the UK
Edinburgh is one of the most visited cities in the UK, and you'll quickly realise why. The Scottish capital is one of the most picturesque cities on the planet, and plays host to the world-famous Fringe Festival. The relatively small size of the city makes walking tours popular, allowing travellers to learn about Edinburgh's long past and some of its most famous and infamous citizens on foot.
Three hours west of London by car, Cardiff offers a glimpse into Welsh life. The historic city centre is mostly pedestrianised, and quickly links the water side with the castle. The famous shopping arcade sticks with tradition, and lets you taste famous Welsh cheeses, sausages and other delicacies.
The United Kingdom is made up of four separate nations, and Belfast completes the list of capitals. As well as tours to the dockyards where HMS Titanic was built, visitors to Northern Ireland's biggest city should consider going to the botanic gardens, the opera house and the hiking trails in the surrounding hills.
Where to go after the UK
A direct flight from London to Copenhagen takes just two hours. The Danish capital showcases northern European architecture, a well developed cycle way and a host of local beers. Be sure to stroll along the water at sunset, seeing Nyhavn, the opera house and the statue of the Little Mermaid. For the more free-spirited, make sure you pay a visit to the suburb of Christiana.
Slightly farther away is Krakow. The southern Polish city is a popular destination for Brits who want to visit Eastern Europe, and the city is seen to be more cultured and have a better nightlife than capital Warsaw. Common day trips include seeing the impressive salt mines at Wieliczka and the harrowing experience of visiting Auschwitz.
For a completely different destination, direct flights land in Istanbul four hours after leaving London Heathrow. The Turkish city, which famously bridges the Europe-Asia border, is full of iconic Islamic architecture, incredible dining options and markets that bombard all your senses.
