The Federated States of Micronesia is one of the six sovereign countries Micronesia (northwestern subregion of Oceania) is divided into. Aside from being an independent sovereign island nation, the Federal States of Micronesia is also a United States Associated States consisting of four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The states comprise about 607 islands in total, with a combined land area of 702 square kilometres, and coves a longitudinal distance of nearly 2,700 kilometres. Despite the relatively small land area, FSM occupies over 2,600,000 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. The capital of FSM is Palikir, situated on Pohnpei Island, and the largest city is Weno, situated in the Chuuk Atoll.
Where to go
Waterfalls in Micronesia - FSM is blessed with plenty of striking falls and caves that can be reached by hiking. The most popular waterfall in Pohnpei is Kepirohi Waterfall, with a large open lake at the base that makes it the perfect spot for swimming. The pool by the twin falls of Nanpil River and Liduduhniap has a picnic area that overlooks the pools from above.
James Palsis Marine Park - James Palsis Marine Park protects some of the country's most significant forests, and its mangrove and lagoon and sea-grass meadow ecosystems. The park is situated between the villages of Tafunsak and Walung in Kosrae, and has picnic huts, toilet facilities, and drinkable water.
Nan Madol - Nan Madol is the former capital of the Saudeleur dynasty until 1628, and is currently a ruined city adjacent to the eastern shore of Pohnpei. It is situated in the present day Madolenihmw district. Constructed in a lagoon, Nan Madol consists of a series of small artificial islands, 92 to be exact, occupying 222 acres. The islands are linked by canals. Lehn Paipohn Waterfall is one of the most remote and feeds the deepest and largest lake on the island.
Short-haul flights from Micronesia are to Tamuning and Barrigada, Guam, and Koror, Republic of Palau. There are also seasonal flights to Manila, Philippines.
There are direct flights from a couple of the international airports in Micronesia to Honolulu, on the island of Hawaii. The main tourist attraction in Honolulu, apart from the beaches and the culture, is Pearl Harbour and USS Arizona Memorial. Other popular tourist destinations in Honolulu are the large, crescent-shaped beach of Waikiki, Lyon Arboretum and Manoa Falls, and the Iolani Palace.

There are four international airports serving the Federated States of Micronesia: Pohnpei International Airport on Pohnpei, Chuuk International Airport on Chuuk, Kosrae International Airport on Kosrae, and Yap International Airport on Yap. Pohnpei International Airport has connections to Guam, Honolulu, Kwajalein, and Majuro. Chuuk International Airport operates to Honolulu, Kwajalein, Majuro, and seasonally, to Manila. Kosrae International Airport also provides flights to Honolulu. Yap International Airport has flights to Guam and Koror. All four airports are served by United Airlines and some have connections to the other.
