Japan has a rich and varied culture. From its long history and iconic samurai, emperors and geisha to its modern day obsession with anime, manga and all things kawaii, there's a huge selection of things to do and places to go.
Where to go in Japan
Just a one-hour flight from Tokyo, Nagoya is home to one of the best-preserved ancient castles in the country. While you walk around the grounds, you'll get a feeling for the olden days and have a chance to join in a traditional tea ceremony. Nagoya is also home to Toyota, and you can take a guided tour of the car factory.
Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto is home to many important buildings and traditional shrines. Many aspects of Japanese life – such as the geisha – come from Kyoto. Another popular attraction is the Philosopher's Walk, along a canal lined with cherry trees that famously blossom so beautifully in spring.
Nagasaki, along with Hiroshima, was one of two cities that the Americans infamously dropped an atomic bomb on during World War II. The city has been rebuilt, but its harrowing history is commemorated in the Atomic Bomb Museum by the Nagasaki Peace Park, which has been developed at Ground Zero.

While there are many similarities between Japan and South Korea, there are plenty of differences too. Seoul is the highlight of Korea, and it's fast becoming recognised as one of the world's top holiday destinations as well as one of its most advanced cities. The cuisine, language and alphabet are all different, but like Japan, Seoul has a rich history, delicious food and a love for the bizarre.
The capital of Nepal is often visited by travellers on their way to climb or fly around Mount Everest, but Kathmandu has much to see within its boundaries. Take your pick from the many temples and stupas in the city, enjoy the markets at Thamel or visit Kumari Chowk to witness a living goddess (she appears daily at 4pm).
Tokyo has direct flights to Almaty, capital of Kazakhstan. A quick Google image search will astound many, especially if your only source of information on the country is Borat. From the cathedral to the national parks, and the trips out to the countryside, Almaty has a wide range of options to give you a unique holiday experience.
