Where to go
Parc National de Taï - Taï National Park is a national park in Ivory Coast that contains one of West Africa's last areas of primary rainforest. Five mammal species that live within the 3,300 square-kilometre area, namely the olive colobus monkey, pygmy hippopotamus, leopard, chimpanzee, and Jentink's duiker, are included in the red list of threatened species. In 1978 it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and in 1978 was inscribed as a Natural World Heritage Site.
Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve - Another attraction in Ivory Coast designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, though the protected area as a whole belongs to both Ivory Coast and Guinea. It encompasses a geographically unique area and is home to over 200 endemic species.
Basilica of Our Lady of Peace - The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Yamoussoukro. The basilica, which is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, was constructed between 1985 and 1989. It occupies an area of 30,000 square metres and is 158 metres high, and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest church in the world. However, the basilica is not a cathedral; the seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Yamoussoukro and the principal place of worship is the nearby Cathedral of Saint Augustine.
Parc National d'Abokouamekro - One protected area named Abokouamekro Game Reserve is located about an hour away from Yamoussoukro. Established in 1993, it lies over 135 square kilometres and provides refuge to the threatened wildlife in the region.
Bouaké - Bouaké is the second largest city in the country, situated in the Eastern Plantations region. It is known for its local crafts by the Baoulé people, as well as for its large carnival and market and the St. Michael's Cathedral.
Not far off is the city of Dakar, capital of Senegal, where tourists can visit the IFAN Museum of African Arts, the Grand Mosque of Dakar, the African Renaissance Monument, Lake Retba, and the House of Slaves and its Door of No Return in the nearby Gorée Island.
One particularly famous long haul destination is Kenya, known for its classic savannah safaris. Among its top tourist destinations are the Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate National Park, and the second highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya.
