Cheap flights from Bulgaria

A modest destination in an otherwise cosmopolitan continent, Bulgaria covers all the bases for tourists looking to explore Southeast Europe. The country features a wide variety of attractions from wild woodlands and mountains, remote villages, and fascinating structures to the bustling cities and beaches along its eastern coast. This shows how Bulgaria is an emerging tourism hotspot in the region with a wide range of activities to add to an itinerary.

Travellers interested in active pursuits will especially look forward to a trip to Bulgaria's mountains. It occupies a portion of the eastern Balkan Peninsula with two mountain ranges crossing the countryside. One can also go on to have delightful nature trips due to the biodiversity of plant and animal species contained in national parks and reserves. Some of the oldest trees in the world can also be found here with many endemic and endangered plants growing in the forested areas.

Where to go

Sofia, the capital of the country, makes a vibrant destination with its domed churches, Ottoman mosques, and Soviet-era landmarks that somehow meld with the sight of high-rise buildings, hotels, and malls. Tourists can start the sightseeing in front of Aleksander Nevski Church, which was designed in the Neo-Byzantine style with mosaics and gold-laden domes. Those going inside can gaze at the murals and chandeliers, as well as the religious icons in the crypt. From here, a visit to the Ethnographical Museum can follow where one can look at regional costumes, crafts, and other relics. From here, one can go on to see other landmarks in the city and then venture to Borisova Gradina. This park is filled with various statues, flowerbeds, and walking trails where one can stroll around and bask in the restful green atmosphere.

A holiday in the city is not enough for a vacation in Bulgaria. Travellers can move on to the countryside such as Veliko Tarnovo and Central Mountains. It plays a major role in preserving the national heritage due to its period architecture and sites that were once battlefields such as Shipka Pass. Veliko Tarnovo is particularly spectacular with its impressive fort, which was once a home for Bulgarian tsars. There are more to this part of the country than historic monuments, however. Tourists will find here the Valley of Roses where rose oil is produced. Additionally, outdoor activities such as hiking and horseback riding can be enjoyed here, such as in the mountains of the Stara Planina and the Sredna Gora.

Athens, only more than an hour away from Sofia, makes an excellent follow-up. It opens up to the sights of the Parthenon and other prestigious landmarks in the Acropolis. This admirable city, however, is merely the cap to a treasury of landmarks in Greece. This Mediterranean country offers a rich variety of cultural destinations, nature tours, and cuisine that can charm travellers to staying for a longer period of time. One can go through the lively nightlife of Mykonos to the peaceful quiet of Meteora. The rugged countryside of Crete also awaits those who want to explore the mountains and caves, as well as rest on the shores of its coastlines. Delphi and Metsovo also make breath-taking additions with Corfu serving other historical landmarks for tourists.

Travellers planning a trip to Uruguay will face a long journey that will make about two days or so. The sights to find can more than make up for the trip, as travellers will find a lot to like about Montevideo, the capital. This city has a rich cultural life, as one will see in the historic business district where art deco and neoclassical buildings are grouped with skyscrapers and malls. Music, theatre, and the arts scenes are also vibrant here, allowing one to watch a play or get into a cosy tango bar. From here, one can explore other parts of Uruguay such as beautiful Colonia, and cosmopolitan Punta del Este.
